Invasive fungal infections are a serious complication for haematology patients. However, there is no study on this subject in Reunion Island. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of invasive fungal infections in patients with haematological malignancies at the University Hospital of Reunion Island.

A Comparative Study of Human Leptospirosis between Mayotte and Reunion Islands Highlights Distinct Clinical and Microbial Features Arising from Distinct Inter-Island Bacterial Ecology.

Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonosis for which investigations assessing host-pathogen interaction are scarce. The aim of this study was to compare the severity and bacterial species involved in human cases of leptospirosis on Reunion and Mayotte islands, territories located in the southwest Indian Ocean that have recorded high human leptospirosis incidence but display fairly distinct epidemiological situations. A retrospective multicentric study including all patients over 18 years of age from Mayotte or Reunion with proven leptospirosis was conducted from January 2018 to April 2020.

Clinical and Epidemiological Aspects of Acute Q Fever in Reunion Island over Fourteen Years: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

The clinical characteristics and epidemiology of Q fever in the Tropics are poorly described. We performed a retrospective cohort study of hospitalized cases between 2004 and 2017 in Reunion Island. Acute Q fever was defined in presence of a positive serology (phase II IgG ≥ 200 and phase II IgM ≥ 50), or a seroconversion (4-fold increase in phase II IgG between paired samples), or a positive PCR (blood or serum).

The monocytosis during human leptospirosis is associated with modest immune cell activation states.

Leptospirosis is a life-threatening zoonotic disease and it has been hypothesized that the innate immune system fails to control the infection through ill-characterized mechanisms. The aim of this observational study was to better evaluate the activation processes of monocytes at the early stage of the disease. Blood samples were taken from healthy donors (n = 37) and patients hospitalized for either non-severe (n = 25) or severe (n = 32) leptospirosis.

Réunion Island prepared for possible Zika virus emergence, 2016.

Zika virus (ZIKV) has recently spread widely and turned into a major international public health threat. Réunion appears to offer conditions particularly favourable to its emergence and therefore prepared to face possible introduction of the virus. We designed a scaled surveillance and response system with specific objectives, methods and measures for various epidemiological phases including a potential epidemic.

High leptospiremia is associated with low gamma-delta T cell counts.

The role of innate immune cells either to mount appropriate defense mechanisms or to drive uncontrolled tissue injuries during acute leptospirosis is poorly understood. This study aimed at characterizing the selective mobilization of innate immune cells and the level of target organ injuries in response to leptospiremia. We focused on gamma-delta (γ-δ) T cells.

Murine typhus, Reunion, France, 2011-2013.

Murine typhus case was initially identified in Reunion, France, in 2012 in a tourist. Our investigation confirmed 8 autochthonous cases that occurred during January 2011-January 2013 in Reunion. Murine typhus should be considered in local patients and in travelers returning from Reunion who have fevers of unknown origin.

Leptospirosis after a stay in Madagascar.

We report a case of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed leptospirosis in a patient who recently traveled to Madagascar, a country where only two cases have been reported since 1955. Although laboratory and clinical presentations were atypical and despite leptospirosis not being a documented disease in Madagascar, blood and urine tests for leptospirosis enabled retrospective confirmation of the diagnosis.

Persistent chronic inflammation and infection by Chikungunya arthritogenic alphavirus in spite of a robust host immune response.

Alphaviruses, including Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), produce a transient illness in humans, but severe forms leading to chronic incapacitating arthralgia/arthritis have been reported by mechanisms largely ill-characterized. The pathogenesis of CHIKV was addressed in a prospective cohort study of 49 hospitalized patients from Reunion Island subsequently categorized into two distinct groups at 12 mo postinfection. Comprehensive analyses of the clinical and immunological parameters throughout the disease course were analyzed in either the "recovered" or the "chronic" groups to identify prognostic markers of arthritis-like pathology after CHIKV disease.

[The risk of rabies in France and the illegal importation of animals from rabid endemic countries].

Introduction: Since October 2001, France has the status of a country free from rabies regarding warm-blooded animals. Nevertheless, the risk of rabies is ever present and related to the illegal importation of animals from countries in which rabies is considered to be endemic.

Observation: In 2001, a puppy imported illegally from Morocco died from rabies in Gironde, requiring the prophylactic treatment of 21 persons exposed and the euthanasia of a contact animal, as well as the application of legal measures against the couple at the origin of the importation.
