High mortality from pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis: a retrospective cohort study.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study.

Objective: In this pilot study, we aimed to assess the incidence, diagnostic strategies, treatment regimens, and outcomes of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis (PVO), in a non-urban, Northern European population during 1 year.

Setting: Region Zealand, Denmark.

Spondylodiscitis, infection of the spine and intervertebral discs, is a rare condition with increasing incidence. Early diagnosis can be challenging due to the non-specific symptoms such as back pain and fever. Diagnosis is verified by MRI.
