[World war I as seen by Franciscans of Slavonski Brod].

There is a profound and permanent connection between Franciscans and Slavonski Brod (formerly known as Brod na Savi). It has lasted for centuries, as Franciscans were present in the town even during the Turkish occupation. They were the first town pastors after its independence from the Turks in 1691 and are present today with churches, monasteries, and the Franciscan High School, which opened in 1995.

[Health and social conditions in Brod na Savi during World War I].

During World War I, social and health conditions were difficult in Brod na Savi, as it stationed a large number of troops, and the military hospital was crowded with patients. With so many able-bodied men and breadwinners mobilised, the town's economy verged on the brink of poverty, but people managed to keep starvation at bay. The most common diseases among civilians were tuberculosis, malaria, intestinal infectious diseases, diphtheria, and venereal diseases, and in 1915 cholera broke out that lasted five months.

[CROATIAN GUIDELINES FOR THE PHARMACOTHERAPY OF TYPE 2 DIABETES].

Introduction: The Croatian Association for Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders of the Croatian Medical Association has issued in 2011 the first national guidelines for the nutrition, education, self-control, and pharmacotherapy of diabetes type 2. According to the increased number of available medicines and new evidence related to the effectiveness and safety of medicines already involved in the therapy there was a need for update of the existing guidelines for the pharmacotherapy of type 2 diabetes in the Republic of Croatia.

Participants: as co-authors of the Guidelines there are listed all members of the Croatian Association for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, as well as other representatives of professional societies within the Croatian Medical Association, who have contributed with comments and suggestions to the development of the Guidelines.

Salutary effect of gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 in two different stress urinary incontinence models in female rats.

Background: Since an originally anti-ulcer stable gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 (PL 14736) was shown to promote healing of injured striated muscle and smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract, we explored its therapeutic potentials for leak point pressure (LPP) recovery in rat stress urinary incontinence (SUI) after transabdominal urethrolysis (TU) and prolonged vaginal dilatation (VD).

Material And Methods: During a 7-day period, TU-rats and VD-rats (or healthy rats) received BPC 157, either (i) intraperitoneally, 10 µg/kg or 10 ng/kg, once daily (first administration 30 min after surgery, last 24 h before LPP-testing and sacrifice), or (ii) per-orally, 10 µg/kg in drinking water (0.16 µg/mL, 12 mL/rat/day).

Pericardial effusion complicating swine origin influenzae A (H1N1) infection in a 50-year-old woman.

Acute pericarditis is a well-recognized but rare complication of numerous viral infections. We report a case of a 50-year-old woman with novel influenza A (H1N1) infection complicated by pericardial effusion. Resolution of both symptoms and pericardial effusion occurred after a treatment with oseltamivirin and ibuprofen.

Antioxidant enzymes activity in patients with peripheral vascular disease, with and without presence of diabetes mellitus.

The study evaluated antioxidant status in patients with peripheral vascular disease (PVD), with and without concomitant diabetes mellitus (DM). 211 participants were divided into standardized 4 groups: patients with PVD and DM (PVD+DM+), patients with PVD without DM (PVD+DM-), patients without PVD with DM (PVD-DM+) and patients without PVD and DM (PVD-DM-). The diagnosis of PVD was established by Doppler sonography analysis, including determination of the ankle brachial index (ABI), partial pressures along the leg, and CW Doppler sonography at typical locations.
