Background And Objectives: ADV7103 is a new prolonged-release treatment for distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA), containing potassium citrate and potassium bicarbonate. Since acidosis may affect bone mineral contents, the effects of ADV7103 on bone mineral density (BMD) and growth in patients with dRTA over 24 months were evaluated.
Patients And Methods: Thirty patients (24 paediatric patients and 6 adults) were included in an open-label extension study after a phase II/III trial.

The teaching of nephrology as part of a degree in medicine is potentially one of the most decisive factors when choosing a speciality. Until now, however, we have not had an overview of the teaching of nephrology in Spain. We have integrated information available in public databases with a survey and personal interviews with those responsible for teaching in Spanish medical faculties.

The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study measures the health of populations worldwide and by country on an annual basis and aims at helping guide public policy on health issues. The GBD estimates for Spain in 2016 and recent trends in mortality and morbidity from 2006 to 2016 were recently published. According to these estimates, chronic kidney disease was the 8th cause of death in Spain in 2016.

Uremic secondary hyperparathyroidism is a multifactorial and complex disease often present in advanced stages of chronic kidney disease. The accumulation of phosphate, the increased FGF23 levels, the reduction in active vitamin D production, and the tendency to hypocalcemia are persistent stimuli for the development and progression of parathyroid hyperplasia with increased secretion of PTH. Parathyroid proliferation may become nodular mainly in cases of advanced hyperparathyroidism.

In this overview, we will focus on those therapies, which are aimed at preventing or delaying cardio-vascular disease, retarding or halting the progression of CKD, or both. We will discuss, consecutively, inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone axis, beta-blockers, calcium-channel antagonists, anti-inflammatory drugs, intestinal sorbents, calcimimetics, and glitazones.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed of 40 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) who underwent cervical surgery for HPT. Weight, histology, and localization of hyperplastic glands were recorded.
