Elasticity Characteristics of Thenar Muscles in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Objective: Measurement of thenar muscle elasticity by ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) may be useful for the diagnosis and evaluation of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), but there is a paucity of information on SWE of the thenar muscles in patients with CTS. The purpose of this study was to investigate the elasticity of the thenar muscles in patients with CTS.

Methods: Twenty-two adult patients with a referral diagnosis of CTS (27 hands) and 20 healthy volunteers as a control (20 dominant hands) participated in this study.

Paradoxical thinning of the diaphragm on ultrasound is a risk factor for requiring non-invasive ventilation in patients with neuromuscular diaphragmatic dysfunction.

Introduction/aims: Point-of-care ultrasound of the diaphragm is highly sensitive and specific in the detection of neuromuscular diaphragmatic dysfunction. In some patients with neuromuscular diaphragmatic dysfunction, paradoxical thinning of the diaphragm during inspiration is observed on ultrasound; however, its frequency, electrodiagnostic associations, and prognostic significance remain uncertain.

Methods: Medical records of patients presenting to two electrodiagnostic laboratories (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota and University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta) from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022, for evaluation of suspected neuromuscular respiratory failure, were reviewed.

The Utility of Ultrasound in the Evaluation of Traumatic Hallux Valgus.

Unlabelled: Isolated disruption of the medial collateral ligament of the great toe is rare and often misdiagnosed as turf toe. It may progress to acquired traumatic hallux valgus, often requiring operative intervention and a longer return to play. This case of a grade II medial collateral ligament injury highlights the importance of a thorough physical examination and consideration of the mechanism of injury.

Exertional Rhabdomyolysis: A Retrospective Population-based Study.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and characteristics of exertional rhabdomyolysis (ER) in a population-based cohort.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed in Olmsted County, Minnesota, from 2003 to 2015. Incident ER cases were ascertained through the Rochester Epidemiology Project medical record linkage system through electronic searches of the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, codes and clinical note text.

An Unusual Case of Median Neuropathy: Application of Short Segmental Sensory Nerve Stimulation.

A 55-year-old woman presented with an 18-month history of intermittent left-hand paresthesias affecting her first, second, and third digits. A small, immobile, nontender midline mass on the volar aspect of the left wrist was also present. Evaluation included normal routine nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography.

The Feasibility and Effects of Acupuncture on Muscle Soreness and Sense of Well-being in an Adolescent Football Population.

Objective: The aims of the study were to assess the feasibility of performing acupuncture on multiple adolescent athletes in a warm weather, high-intensity training environment and to measure perceived effects of acupuncture on delayed-onset muscle soreness and sense of well-being.

Design: This is a prospective feasibility study (registered clinical trial NCT03478800). Forty-two healthy male participants, aged 13-18 yrs, were involved in at least 1 of 5 treatment days for a total of 147 individual treatment sessions.

Low Back Pain in Adults With Transfemoral Amputation: A Retrospective Population-Based Study.

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is common among individuals with transfemoral amputation (TFA) and has a negative impact on quality of life. Little is known about health care utilization for LBP in this population and whether utilization varies by amputation etiology.

Objective: To determine if individuals with TFA have an increased likelihood of seeking care or reporting symptoms of acute or chronic LBP during physician visits after amputation compared with matched individuals without amputation.

The risk of major cardiovascular events for adults with transfemoral amputation.

Background: It is well-known that the risk of cardiac disease is increased for those with lower-limb amputations, likely as a result of the etiology of the amputation. Using a longitudinal population-based dataset, we examined the association between transfemoral amputation (TFA) status and the risk of experiencing a major cardiac event for those undergoing either dysvascular or traumatic amputations. The association of receiving a prosthesis with the risk of experiencing a major cardiac event was also examined.

Fibrocartilaginous embolic myelopathy: demographics, clinical presentation, and functional outcomes.

Increasing neuroradiology exam volumes on-call do not result in increased major discrepancies in primary reads performed by residents.

Background And Purpose: A common perception is that increased on-call workload leads to increased resident mistakes. To test this, we evaluated whether increased imaging volume has led to increased errors by residents.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective review was made of all overnight neuroradiology CT exams with a primary resident read from 2006-2010.

Laterality errors in radiology reports generated with and without voice recognition software: frequency and clinical significance.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence, types, and clinical implications of laterality errors and the effect of voice recognition software on the frequency of laterality errors.

Methods: All radiology reports generated between January 2007 and April 2011 were retrospectively evaluated to identify revised reports containing laterality errors. Type of error was catalogued with regard to modality, body part, type of discrepancy (major or minor, with discrepancies considered major if the potential existed to affect patient management), duration of time between report finalization and corrected report, clinical significance, and use of voice recognition.
