Identification of novel genetic markers of breast cancer survival.

Background: Survival after a diagnosis of breast cancer varies considerably between patients, and some of this variation may be because of germline genetic variation. We aimed to identify genetic markers associated with breast cancer-specific survival.

Methods: We conducted a large meta-analysis of studies in populations of European ancestry, including 37954 patients with 2900 deaths from breast cancer.

Superior turbinectomy: role for a two-surgeon technique in endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery--technical note.

We describe a practical technique of superior turbinectomy followed by posterior ethmoidectomy as a less invasive procedure for two-surgeon technique on endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery. After identification of the superior turbinate and the sphenoid ostium, the inferior third portion of the superior turbinate was coagulated and resected. This partial superior turbinectomy procedure exposed the posterior ethmoidal sinus.

Early compensatory and anticipatory postural adjustments following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Purpose: Early identification of postoperative neuromuscular deficits has been advocated to prevent muscle weakness and maximize functional outcomes following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). The purpose of this study was to investigate neuromechanical changes in compensatory and anticipatory postural adjustments, which play a major role in minimizing unpredictable and predictable disturbances, respectively, as early as 2 months after ACLR.

Methods: Nine young male individuals who underwent ACLR with patellar tendon and nine age-matched healthy controls were exposed to two blocks of ten either unexpected or expected loading perturbations of the knee joint, while semi-reclined on a raised plinth.

Cannabinoid antagonist in nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs): design, characterization and in vivo study.

This study describes the preparation, characterization, and in vivo evaluation in rats of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) encapsulating rimonabant (RMN) as prototypical cannabinoid antagonist. A study was conducted in order to optimize NLC production by melt and ultrasonication method. NLCs were prepared by alternatively adding the lipid phase into the aqueous one (direct protocol) or the aqueous phase into the lipid one (reverse protocol).

Bilateral simultaneous femoral neck fracture mimicking abdominal pain in a cerebral palsy patient.

Simultaneous bilateral femoral neck fractures are unusual lesions, generally associated with an underlying condition which causes impaired bone mineralization, triggered by an increased bone stress. We present a 24-year-old cerebral palsy patient, who was previously evaluated in another institution due to inability to walk, interpreted as abdominal pain. No alteration in blood analysis or abdominal X-rays was found.

Biodistribution of nanostructured lipid carriers: a tomographic study.

This study describes the preparation, characterization, and biodistribution of radiolabelled nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) especially designed for in vivo tomographic study. A preliminary formulative study was conducted in order to incorporate (99m)Tc based tracer in NLCs. At this aim a (99m)Tc complex containing a terminal (99m)Tc ≡ N multiple bond ([(99m)Tc]N-DBODC2) has been synthesized and included in NLCs produced by a stirring and ultrasonication method.

Rectal ulcer: Due to ketoprofen, argon plasma coagulation and prostatic brachytherapy.

Prostatic brachytherapy with permanent seed implants is a recent and safe radiation therapy technique associated with radiation-induced digestive disease. Argon plasma coagulation procedure is a validated modality in the management of haemorrhagic radiation proctitis, which is known to occasionally induce chronic rectal ulcers. We report here an original case report of an acute painful rectal ulcer as a consequence of the combination of short-term therapy with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs therapy, prostatic brachytherapy with malposition of seed implants and argon plasma coagulation procedure in a patient with haemorrhagic radiation proctitis.

MicroRNA related polymorphisms and breast cancer risk.

Genetic variations, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in microRNAs (miRNA) or in the miRNA binding sites may affect the miRNA dependent gene expression regulation, which has been implicated in various cancers, including breast cancer, and may alter individual susceptibility to cancer. We investigated associations between miRNA related SNPs and breast cancer risk. First we evaluated 2,196 SNPs in a case-control study combining nine genome wide association studies (GWAS).

1H NMR-based urinary metabolic profiling reveals changes in nicotinamide pathway intermediates due to postnatal stress model in rat.

The maternal separation protocol in rodents is a widely recognized model of early life stress allowing acute and chronic physiological consequences to be studied. An (1)H NMR-based metabolomic approach was applied to urines to evaluate the systemic metabolic consequences of maternal separation stress in female rats after the beginning of weaning and 4 weeks later when the rats were reaching adulthood. Furthermore, because maternal separation is considered as a model mimicking the inflammatory bowel syndrome, the lactulose/mannitol test was used to evaluate the influence of postnatal maternal separation on gut permeability and mucosal barrier function by (1)H NMR spectroscopy analysis of urine.

Biological tissues are very strong light-scattering media. As a consequence, current medical imaging devices do not allow deep optical imaging unless invasive techniques are used. Acousto-optic imaging is a light-ultrasound coupling technique that takes advantage of the ballistic propagation of ultrasound in biological tissues to access optical contrast with a millimeter resolution.

Tubulin glycylases are required for primary cilia, control of cell proliferation and tumor development in colon.

TTLL3 and TTLL8 are tubulin glycine ligases catalyzing posttranslational glycylation of microtubules. We show here for the first time that these enzymes are required for robust formation of primary cilia. We further discover the existence of primary cilia in colon and demonstrate that TTLL3 is the only glycylase in this organ.

Expression of stemness genes in primary breast cancer tissues: the role of SOX2 as a prognostic marker for detection of early recurrence.

The events leading to breast cancer (BC) progression or recurrence are not completely understood and new prognostic markers aiming at identifying high risk-patients and to develop suitable therapy are highly demanded. Experimental evidences found in cancer cells a deregulated expression of some genes involved in governance of stem cell properties and demonstrated a relationship between stemness genes overexpression and poorly differentiated BC subtypes. In the present study 140 primary invasive BC specimens were collected.

A lipophilic "fully-anti" dodecamer from a (5'S)-5',8-cyclo-2'-deoxyguanosine.

The self-assembly of a lipophilic derivative of (5'S)-5',8-cyclo-2'-deoxyguanosine, a mutagenic product formed by hydroxyl radical attack against DNA, has been investigated. This derivative forms, with high fidelity, a dodecameric complex composed of three stacked G-quartets in the presence of strontium picrate. This is the first example of a fully-anti lipophilic G-quadruplex.

Modified hemostatic technique using microfibrillar collagen hemostat in endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery: technical note.

Microfibrillar collagen hemostat (MCH) is accepted as an effective topical hemostatic agent during endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery (EETS), particularly to achieve venous hemostasis; however, handling MCH may be troublesome because of its adherence to gloves and instruments. We describe here a method of "injection" of MCH suspension using a syringe applicator. This technique allows a rapid and precise delivery of MCH to the bleeding points and thereby results in effective hemostasis; in addition, it is easy to prepare and it is also inexpensive.

A modified combined transseptal/transnasal binostril approach for pituitary lesions in patients with a narrow nasal space: technical note.

We describe a modification of the combined transseptal/transnasal binostril approach using a two-surgeon, four-handed technique (modified Stamm's approach) for pituitary lesions in patients with narrow nasal spaces. This approach comprises of a transseptal route through one nostril and a transnasal route without harvesting a pedicled nasoseptal flap (NSF) through the other. On the transseptal side, the nasal septum was removed using an endoscopic septoplasty technique.

A rare case of acute avulsion of both posterior meniscal roots concomitant with an acute anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in a professional soccer player is described. While avulsion of the lateral meniscal root has been extensively reported in association with ACL injuries, medial root avulsion has never been reported in association with acute ACL. A review of the video documentation of the match accident revealed the exact mechanism of injury was a forceful external rotation of the standing limb.
