Anastomotic leak occurrence is a severe complication after colorectal surgery. Considering the difficulty of treating these leaks and their impact on patient care, there is a strong need for an efficient prevention strategy. We evaluated a combination of extracellular vesicles (EVs) from rat adipose-derived stromal cells with a thermoresponsive gel, Pluronic® F127 (PF-127) to prevent anastomotic leaks.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effectiveness of elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) therapy in improving lung function in people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF), specifically looking at the lung clearance index (LCI) as a sensitive measure.
  • 129 pwCF, aged 12-36, were assessed at the start of ETI and after 6 and 12 months, revealing that while most showed significant improvement in lung function measurements (FEV), a small group did not (15.5% had no significant change).
  • Those with minimal change in FEV had better initial pulmonary function, yet showed improved LCI values post-treatment, highlighting the LCI's role in evaluating ETI effectiveness

Thoracic ultrasound (TUS) is a tool that has become increasingly essential in the daily practice of thoracic medicine. Driven by the need to assess patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the use of point-of-care TUS, which has demonstrated several benefits, either as a complement to clinical decision-making for diagnosis or as a real-time guide for procedures, whether as a predictor or measure of treatment response. Here, we present a review of TUS, based on the most recent scientific evidence, from equipment and techniques to the fundamentals of pulmonary ultrasound, describing normal and pathological findings, as well as focusing on the management of lung disease and guidance for invasive thoracic procedures at the bedside.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the frequency of lower extremity lymphedema in patients with early-stage endometrial cancer who had laparoscopic surgery using the sentinel lymph node (SLN) approach.
  • A total of 239 patients were surveyed, revealing that those who underwent hysterectomy with SLN had a significantly lower lymphedema rate (21.4%) compared to those who had systematic lymphadenectomy (44.6%).
  • The results support the use of SLN mapping in laparoscopic surgery for endometrial cancer, as it reduces the risk of lymphatic complications while maintaining diagnostic effectiveness.

Neonicotinoids are synthetic, nicotine-derived insecticides used worldwide to protect crops and domestic animals from pest insects. The reported evidence shows that they are also able to interact with mammalian nicotine receptors (nAChRs), triggering detrimental responses in cultured neurons. Exposure to high neonicotinoid levels during the fetal period induces neurotoxicity in animal models.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are abnormal connections between arteries and veins that bypass the capillary system. Among AVMs, uterine ones are very rare, and it is not possible to have clear data on their incidence, as a good part of the patients remain clinically asymptomatic. Uterine AVMs consist of abnormal communications between branches of the uterine artery and the myometrial venous plexus.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares laparoscopic surgery (minimally invasive) and open surgery for gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) larger than 5 cm, aiming to evaluate their outcomes.
  • It involved 108 patients, with a majority undergoing minimally invasive surgery, showing shorter hospital stays and similar rates of complications and tumor recurrence between the two groups.
  • The findings suggest that laparoscopic surgery is a safe and effective option for larger gastric GISTs, providing the benefits of less invasive procedures without negatively affecting cancer outcomes.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their broad applicability in different fields, but their computer-aided discovery, which avoids a time-consuming trial-and-error investigation, is still lagging. In this paper, a set of nine DESs, composed of choline chloride as a hydrogen-bond acceptor and nine functionalized phenols as hydrogen bond donors, is simulated by using classical molecular dynamics to investigate the possible formation of a DES. The tool of the Voronoi tessellation analysis is employed for producing an intuitive and straightforward representation of the degree of mixing between the different components of the solutions, therefore permitting the definition of a metric quantifying the propensity of the components to produce a uniform solution.

Among the different polymerization techniques, frontal polymerization (FP) has gained high interest from the scientific community because of its peculiar characteristics: in particular, compared to classic polymerization reactions, FP allows for a better exploitation of the heat of polymerization involved, without requiring any external energy input apart from an initial photo or thermal ignition that triggers the reaction. The latter usually propagates in a few tenths of seconds or (at most) minutes through a hot self-sustaining polymerization front, giving rise to the formation of fully cured thermosetting networks or thermoplastic polymers. Furthermore, different polymerization mechanisms can be involved in FP reactions, comprising cationic or anionic, ring-opening metathesis, and free-radical polymerization, among others.
