Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the outcomes of induced labor versus spontaneous labor in uncomplicated near-term twin pregnancies.
  • It found no significant differences in multiple factors like cervical dilation and maternal/neonatal morbidity between the two groups, except for the caesarean section rates.
  • Induction of labor led to a higher caesarean rate (60.6% vs. 33.3%) and a shorter delivery interval between twins, but overall, induction seems to be a safe option.

Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondrial respiratory chain diseases are genetic disorders that impact energy production in cells, potentially causing symptoms in any organ or tissue at any age, including before birth.
  • The study analyzed data from 44 pediatric patients with mitochondrial disease and found significant differences in birth weight and neonatal morbidity compared to a control group, noting a higher occurrence of intrauterine growth restriction.
  • Results indicate that clinical symptoms can occur regardless of the specific genetic defect, highlighting the need for further research on mitochondrial function during embryonic development to better understand these conditions.

The maternal and fetal/congenital infection by cytomegalovirus (CMV) during pregnancy is the leading infectious cause of neurologic impairment and hearing loss. CMV screening during pregnancy has been widely discussed for several years, but still no consensus has been established. Most developed countries do not recommend it because the majority of infected fetuses will be free of any symptom, and there is currently no reliable knowledge about fetal and neonatal prognosis and also due to lack of valid, effective and safe treatment during fetal life.
