Serious Game-Based Balance Training with Augmented Kinesthetic Feedback Enhances Aspects of Postural Control in Poststroke Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Poststroke hemiparesis presents with motor asymmetry and decreased postural control leading to functional limitations. Serious games (SG) for balance rehabilitation of people with stroke may improve motor recovery, and the visual and auditory feedback provided by the SGs helps to explain the therapeutic benefits. However, the contribution of SG combined with kinesthetic and verbal cues during balance training has not been investigated.

MODY calculator applied in patients with clinical diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus: Is a higher cutoff needed?

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the mean post-test probability (PTP) of the Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) calculator in a multiethnic cohort of patients previously diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1DM).

Materials And Methods: The MODY probability calculator proposed by Shields and colleagues (2012) was applied to 117 patients from a T1DM outpatient clinic at a tertiary hospital in Brazil. Additionally, two exons of the gene were sequenced in eight patients who hadn't received insulin treatment within six months after the diagnosis.

Conversely, conflicting views argue that bowel preparation may not improve diagnostic precision, yielding similar results to rectal water contrast.

Early liver function improvement following successful treatment of chronic hepatitis C in patients with decompensated cirrhosis: a real-life study.

Objectives: Despite higher rates of sustained virologic response (SVR), important concerns remain when patients with decompensated cirrhosis due to hepatitis C virus (HCV) are treated with direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA). Questions include efficacy, safety, and the magnitude of liver function improvement. Here, we aimed to evaluate HCV treatment data in this specific population in Brazil.

Giant serous adenofibroma of the fallopian tube.

Serous adenofibroma of the fallopian tube is a rare, benign tumour of the female genital tract. They are usually small, asymptomatic and incidentally diagnosed during a surgery for another gynaecological condition. This report presents an atypical case of a 17-year-old girl with a tubal serous adenofibroma that presented with a palpable mass occupying the entire abdomen accompanied by urinary symptoms.

Development of novel Ti-Mo-Mn alloys for biomedical applications.

Due to excellent biocompatibility and corrosion resistance, the application of titanium alloys in orthopedic and dental implants has been increasing since the 1970s. However, the elasticity of these alloys as measured by their Young's modulus is still about two to four times higher than that of human cortical bone. The most widely used titanium alloy for biomedical applications is Ti-6Al-4V, however, previous studies have shown that the vanadium used in this alloy causes allergic reactions in human tissue and aluminum, also used in the alloy, has been associated with neurological disorders.

Characterization of falls in adults with established rheumatoid arthritis and associated factors.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis patients may have an increased risk of falls due to changes caused by the disease such as muscle weakness, joint impairment, reduced mobility and postural instability. The aim of this study was to prospectively analyze the occurrence of falls in RA patients and its risk factors.

Methods: A cohort of 86 RA patients were assessed over 1 year for disease activity using the Disease Activity Score (DAS-28), for functionality using the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), for the characterization of falls and for the use of medications, and they were subjected to the Berg Balance Scale (Berg), Timed Up and Go (TUG), 6-Minute Walk (6MWT) and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) tests.

Effect of Feeding Spores to Broilers Challenged with serovar Heidelberg Brazilian Strain UFPR1 on Performance, Immune Response, and Gut Health.

Salmonellosis is a poultry industry and public health concern worldwide. Recently, serovar Heidelberg (SH) has been reported in broilers in Brazil. The effect of feeding a blend of three strains of (PRO) was studied in broilers orally challenged (10 CFU/chick) or not with a SH isolated in south of Brazil (UFPR1 strain).

Falls and their association with physical tests, functional capacity, clinical and demographic factors in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Objective: To evaluate the occurrence of falls reported by rheumatoid arthritis patients and its relation to disease activity, functional capacity and physical fitness.

Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional study constituted by a sample of 97 rheumatoid arthritis patients from the city of Marília (SP) from 2012 to 2013, were assessed for disease activity. Instruments validated for Brazilian population in order to evaluate physical and functional capacity were used.

Reptiles are the unique ectothermic amniotes, providing the key link between ectothermic anamniotes fish and amphibians, and endothermic birds and mammals; becoming an important group to study with the aim of providing significant knowledge into the evolutionary history of vertebrate immunity. Classification systems for reptiles' leukocytes have been described by their appearance rather than function, being still inconsistent. With the advent of modern techniques and the establishment of analytical protocols for snakes' blood by flow cytometry, we bring a qualitative and quantitative assessment of innate activities presented by snakes' peripheral blood leukocytes, thereby linking flow cytometric features with fluorescent and light microscopy images.

Learning Supervised Topic Models for Classification and Regression from Crowds.

The growing need to analyze large collections of documents has led to great developments in topic modeling. Since documents are frequently associated with other related variables, such as labels or ratings, much interest has been placed on supervised topic models. However, the nature of most annotation tasks, prone to ambiguity and noise, often with high volumes of documents, deem learning under a single-annotator assumption unrealistic or unpractical for most real-world applications.
