Northern Argentina's horses, mostly healthy but with some showing illness symptoms, live in areas with little veterinary access and interact with wildlife and disease vectors.
A study surveyed 20 horses and found that all were positive for equine infectious anaemia and West Nile fever, while a significant percentage tested positive for surra and equine piroplasmosis.
This research highlights the urgent need for surveillance and control of equine diseases in the region, marking the first report of horses being simultaneously positive for these four infections.
