Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious cardiac infection of the endocardium, native and prosthetic valves, or cardiac device. In this case study, we report a case of an immunocompetent patient with severe aortic valve endocarditis. A 54-year-old female presented to the emergency department with progressive shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, and cough for a period of 20 days.

The Road to Developing Standard Time for Efficient Nursing Care: A Time and Motion Analysis.

(1) Background: The amount of time nurses spend with their patients is essential to improving the quality of patient care. Studies have shown that nurses spend a considerable amount of time on a variety of activities--which are often not taken into account while estimating nurse-to-patient care time allocation--that could potentially be eliminated, combined or delegated with greater productivity. The current study aimed to calculate standard time for each activity category by quantifying the amount of time required by nurses to complete an activity category and determine the adjustment time that can be given during work, as well as determine factors that can be altered to improve the efficiency of nursing care on inpatient general wards of a governmental hospital.

Hypercalcemia as a rare presentation of hyaline fibromatosis syndrome from different Sudanese families: two case reports.

Background: Hyaline fibromatosis syndrome is a rare progressive autosomal recessive connective tissue disorder caused by a mutation in the ANTXR2/CMG2 gene. According to its severity, patients may present with skin nodules or visceral infiltration, which carries a poor prognosis. Hypercalcemia has not been reported as a presenting feature of this syndrome.

Children's Perceptions of the Ontario Student Nutrition Program (OSNP) in Southwestern Ontario, Canada.

This study aimed to explore children's lived experiences with the Ontario Student Nutrition Program (OSNP), a free, school-based snack program implemented in elementary schools in Southwestern, Ontario, Canada, to gain insights into future school food programs (SFP). Focus group discussions (n=17) were conducted with 105 children in Grades 5 to 8 in seven elementary schools. Focus groups were audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded for themes using inductive content analysis.

Fruit and Vegetable Intake Is Associated with Food Knowledge among Children Aged 9-14 Years in Southwestern Ontario, Canada.

Interventions to improve dietary quality and intake of fruits and vegetables (FV) among Canadian children have had modest success, and it has been suggested that food knowledge could be key to improvement. Programs have been criticized for insufficiently connecting food knowledge with food skills and decision making about dietary intake. The objective of this study was to investigate factors associated with FV consumption by elementary school children, aged 9-14 years, in Ontario, Canada, including food knowledge, socioeconomic status, sociodemographic characteristics, and the food environment.

The purpose of this study was to assess the implementation of a school snack program for children in elementary schools. School-level program volunteers' experiences were explored using semi-structured interviews. Fieldnotes were taken during on-site school visits.

What Makes an Image Interesting and How Can We Explain It.

Here, we explore the question: What makes a photograph interesting? Answering this question deepens our understanding of human visual cognition and knowledge gained can be leveraged to reliably and widely disseminate information. Observers viewed images belonging to different categories, which covered a wide, representative spectrum of real-world scenes, in a self-paced manner and, at trial's end, rated each image's interestingness. Our studies revealed the following: landscapes were the most interesting of all categories tested, followed by scenes with people and cityscapes, followed still by aerial scenes, with indoor scenes of homes and offices being least interesting.

Outcome evaluation of fruits and vegetables distribution interventions in schools: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objective: Fruits and vegetables (FV) distribution interventions have been implemented as a public health strategy to increase children's intake of FV at school settings. The purpose of this review was to examine whether snack-based FV distribution interventions can improve school-aged children's consumption of FV.

Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis of articles published in English, in a peer-reviewed journals, were identified by searching six databases up to August 2020.

Creating an Aligned Interface between Nanoparticles and MOFs by Concurrent Replacement of Capping Agents.

Applying metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on the surface of other materials to form multifunctional materials has recently attracted great attention; however, directing the MOF overgrowth is challenging due to the orders of magnitude differences in structural dimensions. In this work, we developed a universal strategy to mediate MOF growth on the surface of metal nanoparticles (NPs), by taking advantage of the dynamic nature of weakly adsorbed capping agents. During this colloidal process, the capping agents gradually dissociate from the metal surface, replaced by the MOF.

Process evaluation of fruit and vegetables distribution interventions in school-based settings: A systematic review.

Despite the importance of process evaluation in program evaluations, research has focused primarily on the effectiveness of fruit and vegetables (FVs) distribution interventions on children's consumption, with little attention given to how these interventions achieve their outcomes. Five bibliographic databases (Embase, PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, and Web of Science Core Collection) were searched in June 2019 for studies of interventions where the main focus was the implementation of distributed FVs to school-aged children as a snack. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tool was used to appraise the risk of bias within included studies.

Novel [l,2,4]triazolo[3,4-a]isoquinoline chalcones as new chemotherapeutic agents: Block IAP tyrosine kinase domain and induce both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of apoptosis.

Two novel chemotherapeutic chalcones were synthesized and their structures were confirmed by different spectral tools. Theoretical studies such as molecular modeling were done to detect the mechanism of action of these compounds. In vitro cytotoxicity showed a strong effect against all tested cell lines (MCF7, A459, HepG2, and HCT116), and low toxic effect against normal human melanocytes (HFB4).

However, in our experience, dual-plane augmentation mastopexy fails to treat severe cases of ptosis (grade 3) and glandular ptosis. Therefore, we conceived a method to manage these cases effectively.

Canadians Who Care: Social Networks and Informal Caregiving Among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Older Adults in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.

Canada is experiencing population aging and evidence on the provision of care is based on data collected from majority populations. This analysis compared social networks and patterns of care provision between heterosexual and lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) Canadians between the age of 45 and 85 years. Data were drawn from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA), a large national study of health and aging.

Purpose: To investigate the change in the profile of patients who had cataract surgery at Ministry of Health (MOH) hospitals in Malaysia.

Design: Secondary analysis on Malaysian Cataract Surgery Registry data.

Methods: The Malaysian Cataract Surgery Registry, a MOH-initiated registry, collects data on patients who had cataract surgery at the 36 MOH ophthalmology departments including demography, causes of cataract, systemic and ocular comorbidity, preoperative visual acuity (VA), operative details, and postoperative outcomes.

The Malaysian Cataract Surgery Registry: Cataract Surgery Practice Pattern.

Purpose: To present the cataract surgery practice pattern among the ophthalmic surgeons in hospitals managed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Malaysia.

Design: Secondary data analysis on Malaysian Cataract Surgery Registry (CSR).

Methods: The Malaysian CSR collected data on cataract surgeries done at all the ophthalmology departments in MOH from year 2002 to 2004 (paper-based) and 2007 to 2011 (web-based).

Opacification of AcriFlex 50CSE hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses.

Purpose: To determine the prevalence of and risk factors for AcriFlex 50CSE hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) opacification approximately 3 years after implantation.

Setting: Selayang Hospital, Selangor, Malaysia.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

CUSUM: a dynamic tool for monitoring competency in cataract surgery performance.

Aims: To apply cumulative sum (CUSUM) in monitoring performance of surgeons in cataract surgery and to evaluate the response of performance to intervention.

Method: A CUSUM analysis was applied to 80 phacoemulsification performed by three ophthalmic trainees and one consultant, for the occurrence of posterior capsular rupture and postoperative refracted vision of worse than 6/12 among patients without pre-existing ocular comorbidity. The CUSUM score of each consecutive procedure performed by an individual surgeon was calculated and charted on CUSUM chart.
