Background: Differences in subjective stress perception and acute response of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis have been reported in internet gaming disorder (IGD). The present study aimed to further investigate alterations in diurnal profiles of the endocrine stress response system in IGD compared to healthy controls (HCs).

Methods: The diurnal course of endocrine markers (salivary cortisol and α-amylase) was investigated in a clinical sample of n = 29 adolescents with IGD compared to n = 26 HC.

Objective: Impairments in personality functioning (PF) according to the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) may affect anorexia nervosa (AN) and its treatment. However, PF impairments in adolescents with AN have not been studied. This case-control study analysed PF impairments in adolescent inpatients suffering from AN compared to a clinical control group (CC) and investigated the relationship of PF with AN severity.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored the factors that affect help-seeking behavior among adolescents with mental health issues in Germany, focusing on sociodemographic and clinical elements.
  • Out of 9,509 participants, 16.9% displayed significant mental health problems, with 55.7% having sought help, primarily from informal sources rather than professionals.
  • The research found that higher levels of mental health issues and positive help-seeking attitudes were key predictors of professional help-seeking, highlighting the need to promote help-seeking behaviors and tackle barriers in mental health services for adolescents.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is an established diagnosis in adolescence with high comorbidity and psychosocial impairment. With the introduction of the alternative model for personality disorders in DSM-5 (AMPD), personality functioning is operationalized using the Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS), which has been shown to be associated with severity of personality pathology. The present study aimed at examining differential psychopathological and psychosocial correlates of LPFS and BPD.

Background: Home treatment in child and adolescent psychiatry offers an alternative to conventional inpatient treatment by involving the patient's family, school, and peers more directly in therapy. Although several reviews have summarised existing home treatment programmes, evidence of their effectiveness remains limited and data synthesis is lacking.

Methods: We conducted a meta-analysis on the effectiveness of home treatment compared with inpatient treatment in child and adolescent psychiatry, based on a systematic search of four databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Embase).

Background: Despite the introduction of dimensional conceptualisations of personality functioning in the latest classification systems, such as Criterion A of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in the DSM-5, heterogeneous clinical presentation of personality pathology remains a challenge. Relatedly, the latent structure of personality pathology as assessed by the Semi-Structured Interview for Personality Functioning DSM-5 (STiP-5.1) has not yet been comprehensively examined in adolescents.

Problematic interpersonal relationships may represent both, a risk factor for the development or trigger of personality disorder (PD) symptoms and its consequences. Since peer relationships become more and more important in adolescence, the current study explores the cross-sectional association between recent bullying experiences and levels of impairment in personality functioning according to the (5th ed.) alternative model of personality disorders (AMPD; Criterion A) in help-seeking adolescents ( = 493).

Background: One in five young people with first-episode psychosis (FEP) also presents with borderline personality disorder (BPD) features. Among people diagnosed with BPD, auditory verbal hallucinations occur in 29-50 % and delusions in 10-100 %. Co-occurrence of psychotic symptoms and BPD is associated with greater clinical severity and greater difficulty accessing evidence based FEP care.

Background: Psychological treatments for young people with sub-threshold or full-syndrome borderline personality disorder (BPD) are found to be effective. However, little is known about the age at which adolescents benefit from early intervention. This study investigated whether age affects the effectiveness of early intervention for BPD.

Adolescence is a critical period for early identification and intervention of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Risk-taking and self-harm behaviors (RSB) have been identified as promising early markers of BPD and correlates of depression in school-based samples. The present study aimed, first, to examine the association between RSB and BPD in a clinical sample of adolescents and, second, to examine whether RSB are also linked to depression.

Clinical guidelines for adults with borderline personality disorder (BPD) recommend outpatient psychotherapy as first-line treatment. Little is known whether this recommendation is also applicable to adolescents. The current study examined the relationship between treatment setting and the outcome of early intervention for adolescents with BPD pathology.

Objective: The impact of the wider social environment, such as neighbourhood characteristics, has not been examined in the development of borderline personality disorder. This study aimed to determine whether the treated incidence rate of full-threshold borderline personality disorder and sub-threshold borderline personality disorder, collectively termed borderline personality pathology, was associated with the specific neighbourhood characteristics of social deprivation and social fragmentation.

Method: This study included young people, aged 15-24 years, who attended Orygen's Helping Young People Early programme, a specialist early intervention service for young people with borderline personality pathology, from 1 August 2000-1 February 2008.

The debate about the value and utility of personality disorder (PD) diagnosis in adolescence published in the May 2022 issue of CAMH generated fervent Twitter discussion. This commentary addresses some points raised in the Twitter discussion that represent important social and/or cultural beliefs that are often presented in day-to-day practice but are rarely tested in the context of scientific evidence. This includes, in particular, the assertion that symptoms used to diagnose personality disorder are better described as sequelae of trauma, and the assertion that effective treatment for PD is possible without a diagnosis.

The Standardized Assessment of Personality-Abbreviated Scale (SAPAS) has been used extensively to screen for personality disorders (PD), including adolescents. Yet, it is unclear how well the SAPAS performs in screening for impairment in personality functioning (IPF), Criterion A of the alternative model for PD (AMPD) in adolescent samples. We examined the performance of the SAPAS in detecting IPF at a diagnostic threshold for PD in the AMPD.

Persistent, interpersonal difficulties are a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Theories propose that these may result from an insufficient object constancy, for example, the insufficient capacity to maintain feelings of closeness (FC) toward a person when he or she is absent. Based on this assumption, this study examined whether FC toward the mother or the best friend were more dependent on previous contact in adolescents with BPD pathology compared with healthy controls.

Introduction: Aggressive behavior in reaction to threats, frustration, or provocation is prevalent in borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study investigated aggressive behavior and its biological correlates in adolescents with BPD.

Methods: Twenty-one female adolescents with a DSM-IV BPD diagnosis and 25 sex- and age-matched healthy controls participated in the Taylor Aggression Paradigm (TAP), a laboratory-based experiment measuring aggressive behavior in the interpersonal context.
