A proton exchange membrane increases the electrical performance of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). New inexpensive materials should be sought, especially in a constructed wetland microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC). Here, in a laboratory-scale system of five CW-MFCs, wet clay, wet earth or mud, and non-woven cloth were used as inexpensive separators with long-term stability.

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni water extracts have been used as a natural sweetener and customary medicine by the indigenous inhabitants of South America for several hundred years. This plant was sent to Europe in the 16th century and was described by Peter Jacob Esteve in Spain. Recently the food industry has started to employ S.

There are doubts about the impact of non-nutritive sweeteners consumption on lipogenic and glycolytic metabolism. Therefore, the objective was to determine the effects of chronic consumption of sweeteners on the activity levels of the enzymes glucokinase (GK), phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1), pyruvate kinase (PKL), acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase (ACC), and fatty acid synthase (FAS) in livers' extracts. Groups of male and female Wistar rats drank solutions of sweeteners for 480 days: Sucrose 10%, glucose 14%, fructose 7%, acesulfame K 0.

Abstract: It has been suggested that the consumption of artificial sweeteners is related to greater body mass gain and diverse metabolic alterations. In this study, the effect of chronic consumption of nutritive sweeteners (fructose 7% and sucrose 10%) and non-nutritive or low-calorie sweeteners (acesulfame 0.015%, aspartame 0.

The consumption of non-nutritive sweeteners has increased in the last decades. However, there are doubts about its consumption and its impact on body mass and metabolic alterations. For this reason, this study investigates the effects of the consumption of nutritive and non-nutritive sweeteners on body mass in different life stages of male and female Wistar rats: Childhood, adolescence, young adult, adulthood, and aged.

Calcium chloride, methanol, and water in stoichiometric amounts were used for the extraction of chitosan from shrimp residues (Farfantepenaeus aztecus). Chitosan was characterized by FT-IR, TGA, XRD, SEM, elemental analysis, and C-NMR. The yield of chitosan with medium molecular mass was 65.

Mercury has been extracted in Queretaro, Mexico since the 1960s. The mining wastes were open-air disposal and these mercury wastes have polluted the zone. The aim of this research was to evaluate mercury's fate in lab scale terrestrial reactors considering the following mercury species: soluble, interchangeable, strongly bound, organic, and residual ones.

Plant support media may impact power output in a biological fuel cell with living plants, due to the physical and biochemical processes that take place in it. A material for support medium should provide the suitable conditions for the robust microbial growth and its metabolic activity, degrading organic matter and other substances; and, transferring electrons to the anode. To consider the implementation of this type of bio-electrochemical systems in constructed wetlands, this study analyzes the electrochemical behavior of biological fuel cells with the vegetal species Phragmites australis, by using two different support media: graphite granules and a volcanic slag, commonly known as tezontle (stone as light as hair, from the Aztec or Nahuatl language).

The accumulation and distribution of lead and chromium was tested in a laboratory-scale constructed wetland (CW) inoculated with metal-tolerant bacteria. Two non-inoculated systems also were evaluated, one planted and the other unplanted. Mass balances indicated that 57% of chromium input was accumulated into inoculated CW after 151 days of operation.
