Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) can be relevant in achieving the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal of decent work by 2030. However, further OSH actions are needed. This paper identifies the role of OSH in addressing two of many determinants of decent work: new forms of work/innovative technologies and worker aging.

Background: The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations (UN) have promoted the concept of decent work as a Sustainable Development Goal for 2030 to address critical global problems. Occupational safety and health (OSH) are components of decent work, primarily through the ILO social protection objective of the goal, and are linked to various other objectives.

Objective: This Commentary applies a previously published staging framework to stimulate thinking about how the OSH field can contribute further to the achievement of decent work.

Objective: To compare cancer mortality among workers exposed to gamma and X radiation and the general population of the city of São Paulo, as well as that of the subgroup monitored with those not monitored for gamma and X radiation in a work unit with ionizing radiation based in the city of São Paulo.

Methods: Between 2016 and 2021, a retrospective open cohort study was carried out with workers who were employed from 08/31/1956 to 12/31/2016 based on data collected at the company and in official institutions. Standardized mortality ratios (SMR) were calculated by sex, age and calendar period of cancers grouped according to type, risk factor and organ system in two analyses: in the external analysis, the mortality of the study population was compared with that of the general population of the city of São Paulo; In the internal analysis, the mortality of the monitored subgroup was compared with that of the subgroup not monitored for gamma and X radiation.

Plasma membrane-derived vesicles, also referred to as large extracellular vesicles (lEVs), are implicated in several pathophysiological situations, including cancer. However, to date, no studies have evaluated the effects of lEVs isolated from patients with renal cancer on the development of their tumors. In this study, we investigated the effects of three types of lEVs on the growth and peritumoral environment of xenograft clear cell renal cell carcinoma in a mouse model.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) encompassing nanovesicles derived from the endosome system and generated by plasmatic membrane shedding are of increasing interest in view of their ability to sustain cell-to-cell communication and the possibility that they could be used as surrogate biomarkers of healthy and unhealthy trajectories. Nutritional strategies have been developed to preserve health, and the impact of these strategies on circulating EVs is arousing growing interest. Data available from published studies are now sufficient for a first integration to better understand the role of EVs in the relationship between diet and health.

  • The Sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway plays a crucial role in embryonic development and has been found to be effective in reducing heart damage and arrhythmias during ischemia-reperfusion in small rodent models.
  • This study aimed to confirm the cardioprotective effects of SHH using a porcine model, where two protocols tested the effectiveness of N-SHH and SHH-containing microparticles (MPs) during coronary artery occlusion and subsequent reperfusion.
  • Results showed that both N-SHH and MPs significantly reduced the occurrence of dangerous arrhythmias and infarct size in pigs, while also lowering biomarkers of heart injury, highlighting the potential of SHH

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the Johns Hopkins Fall Risk Assessment Tool (JH-FRAT) for its effectiveness in predicting fall risks among hospitalized patients.
  • The research involved 297 patients and assessed validity through accuracy measures and discriminant analysis, while reliability was checked through tests with a subset of patients.
  • Results indicated high sensitivity (97%) but low specificity (6%), showing that the tool is good at identifying at-risk patients but may not differentiate well between those who fall and those who don’t.
  • Overall, JH-FRAT proved to be a valid and reliable tool for fall risk assessment, useful for enhancing fall management in hospitals.
