An Italian case of intestinal anisakiasis with a presurgical diagnosis: Could this parasite represent an emerging disease?

Anisakiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the consumption of raw fish containing larvae of the Anisakis species. Since the first description in 1960 of a patient suffering from this pathogen, in the Netherlands, most of the cases have been reported in Japan, where consumption of raw fish is common, but the number of cases is increasing worldwide. The first case identified in Italy dates back to 1996 and a few cases have been reported since then.

[Non-invasive assessment of lung pathobiology in hairdressers].

Background: Hairdressers are exposed to chemical agents with potentially irritant and sensitizing effects on airways.

Objectives: To asses the presence of respiratory symptoms and biochemical and functional changes of the airways in a cohort of hairdressers.

Methods: Respiratory symptoms, lung function tests, fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FE(NO)50) and selected oxidative stress biomarkers [hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE)] in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) were assessed in 23 hairdressers on a rest day (Group 1); 12 workers (Group 2) were willing to perform the same tests at the beginning (BS) and at the end of a shift (ES) on the same working day.

Contrast medium induced nephropathy in urological practice.

Purpose: Contrast medium induced nephropathy is the third cause of in-hospital acute renal failure. The first studies in this area were done with reference to urological practice only. Although various guidelines on the management of contrast medium induced nephropathy were provided by the European Society of Urogenital Radiology, more recently many investigators have focused their attention on contrast medium use in interventional vascular radiology and cardiology.
