This observational study aimed to determine the frequency of utilization of vials containing parenteral medications in a pediatric unit, and to identify nursing team actions related to their preparation and administration. Data were collected from prescription forms and by checking these drugs in the refrigerator and stocks at the unit. Vials were prescribed to 30.

The study of anatomical structures in their normal state allows the identification of pathological changes that can occur in them. Angiogenesis and the vasculature have been widely studied, mainly because of their association with the development of neoplasms. One of the methods applied for such purposes is the corrosion cast technique, which provides a copy of the vessels with normal as well as pathological structures.

Six Wistar rats were used for the vascular casting method with Mercox resin. Following the resin polymerization, the tongue of each animal was dissected and corroded in a 5% sodium hydroxide solution.

These derivatives have potent anticancer properties against several cell lines. Here, we report complete unambiguous assignments of (1)H and (13)C chemical shifts of the new compounds.

In addition a theoretical comparison of the most active compounds with other classical antivirals was also performed. Our results showed 2a, 2d and 2g as the most active compounds that inhibited the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase catalytic activity with cytotoxicity lower than AZT and SI higher than DDC and DDI.

We describe in this paper that the chloroxoquinolinic ribonucleoside 6-chloro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-1-(beta-D-ribofuranosyl)-quinoline-3-carboxylic acid (compound A) inhibits the HIV-1 replication in human primary cells. We initially observed that compound A inhibited HIV-1 infection in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in a dose-dependent manner, resulting in an EC(50) of 1.5 +/- 0.

Patients And Methods: This is a matched case-control study comparing 83 HIV-infected and 83 healthy children and adolescents. Clinical and laboratorial parameters, cIMT and echocardiogram were measured.
New naphthoquinone derivatives were synthesized and assayed against bloodstream trypomastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas' disease. The compounds were rationalized based on hybrid drugs and appear as important compounds against this parasite. From nor-lapachol were prepared five substituted ortho-naphthofuranquinones, a non-substituted para-naphthofuranquinone, a new oxyrane and an azide and from alpha-lapachone a new non-substituted para-naphthofuranquinone.

The fractions obtained were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus as well as for their antioxidant properties (reduction of DPPH radical). Their phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured spectrophotometrically, in order to establish the correlations between these contents and the measured activities.

BALB/c mice were immunized with the lectin ScLL (10, 50, 100 microgram/animal) separately or in association with the soluble Leishmania amazonensis antigen (SLA). After a challenge infection with 10(6) promastigotes, the injury progression was monitored weekly by measuring the footpad swelling for 10 weeks.

All the derivatives were more active than the original quinones, with IC(50)/1 day values in the range of 17 to 359 microM, the apolar phenyl substituted triazole 6 being the most active compound. These triazole derivatives of nor-beta-lapachone emerge as interesting new lead compounds in drug development for Chagas disease.

We describe in this paper that the synthetic chloroxoquinolinic ribonucleoside 6-chloro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-1-(beta-D-ribofuranosyl) quinoline-3-carboxylic acid (compound A) and its free aglycogene base (compound B) inhibit, with low cytotoxicity, the replication of herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2). Compound A inhibited HSV-1 replication in Vero cells with an EC(50) of 1.3 and 1.

In the present study, we examined whether the effect of a mixture of fatty acids upon human lymphocyte death involves cytochrome c release from the mitochondria, activation of caspases 3, 6, 8, and 9, production of superoxide anion, nitric oxide (NO), increase in cytosolic Ca(2+) levels, and expression of the anti-apoptotic 14-3-3 and the pro-apoptotic FasL, bad, and bid proteins. Peripheral blood lymphocytes from healthy subjects were isolated and treated for up to 48 h with increasing concentrations (0.

Their cytotoxicities were compared to doxorubicin and with their synthetic precursors, beta-lapachone and nor-beta-lapachone. The activity against a normal murine fibroblast L-929 showed that some of the compounds were selective against cancer cells.

Methods: Data on mortality due to cerebrovascular and coronary heart diseases in the five regions of Brazil were obtained from the Brazilian Ministry of Health. The data source was the SIM--Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade (System of Information on Mortality), from the Department of Health Information Analysis.
Objective: Analyze the trends in the risk of death from circulatory diseases (CD) in thirteen states in Brazil between 1980 and 1998.
Methods: Data on mortality from CD, ischemic heart diseases (IHD), and cerebrovascular diseases (CVD) in thirteen states were obtained from the Ministry of Health data base. Populational estimates from 1980 to 1998 were calculated through interpolation, using the Lagrange method, based on data from the 1970, 1980, 1991 censuses, and 1996 populational count.
