Urethral lichen sclerosus under the microscope: a survey of academic pathologists.

Introduction: Given the poor understanding of the pathophysiology of genital lichen sclerosus (GLS) and a lack of accepted definitive diagnostic criteria, we proposed to survey pathologists regarding their understanding of GLS. We hypothesized that significant disagreement about GLS will exist.

Materials And Methods: All urologists participating in the Trauma and Urologic Reconstruction Network of Surgeons identified genitourinary (GUP) and dermatopathologists (DP) at their respective institutions who were then invited to participate in an online survey regarding their experience with diagnosing GLS, GLS pathophysiology and its relationship to urethral stricture disease.

Patient-Reported Social, Psychological, and Urologic Outcomes After Adult Buried Penis Repair.

Objective: To assess changes in hygiene, urination, and sexual activity after surgery for adult-acquired buried penis.

Materials And Methods: The study included men who underwent buried penis repair from 2011 to 2015. Patients were asked pre- and postoperative questions on hygiene, urinary difficulties, sexual difficulties, and difficulties with activities of daily living (modified Post-Bariatric Surgery Quality of Life Questionnaire).

Understanding and Managing Erectile Dysfunction in Patients Treated for Cancer.

Cancer can cause sexual adverse effects by direct and indirect pathways. It can involve sexual organs, indirectly affect body image, or cause fatigue or depression with subsequent effects on libido. Erectile dysfunction (ED), the inability to obtain or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse, can also result from adverse effects of cancer treatment, such as fatigue, pain, or anxiety about therapy.

Large Penile Mass With Unusual Benign Histopathology.

Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia is an extremely rare condition presenting as a lesion on the glans penis in older men. Physical exam without biopsy cannot differentiate malignant from nonmalignant growth. We report a case of large penile mass in an elderly male with a history of lichen sclerosis, highly suspicious for malignancy.

Pediatric sutureless circumcision: an effective and cost efficient alternative.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the renal pelvis.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) of the urothelial collecting system are rare. These tumors contain both malignant epithelial and sarcomatous components. Metastatic spread of MPNST is common, however, metastases to the kidney and perirenal tissues are rare.

Fluid flow induces COX-2 expression in MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts via a PKA signaling pathway.

Mechanical loading of bone generates fluid flow within the mineralized matrix which can exert fluid shear stress (FSS) at cell membranes. FSS induces new transcription of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts, with peak effects at 4-5h. Using MC3T3-E1 cells stably transfected with the COX-2 promoter fused to a luciferase reporter, we examined involvement of the protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase C (PKC) signaling pathways in the peak COX-2 mRNA and luciferase responses to FSS (10dyn/cm(2)).
