Background: The Bacillus-derived cyclic lipopeptides (surfactin, iturin, and fengycin) form potent Heterogeneous Lipopeptide Micelle (HeLM) complexes. HeLM is a small molecule that has been shown to have immunomodulatory effects. However, how HeLM regulates inflammation is not clear, moreover its application to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), specifically Ulcerative Colitis (UC), has not been tested before.

Probiotics as an Alternative to Antibiotics: Genomic and Physiological Characterization of Aerobic Spore Formers from the Human Intestine.

A total of thirty-two aerobic spore former strains were isolated from intestinal samples of healthy children and analyzed for their hemolytic and antibiotic-resistant activities. Four strains selected as non-hemolytic and sensitive to all antibiotics recommended as relevant by regulatory agencies were short-listed and evaluated for their in silico and in vitro probiotic potentials. Vitamin D (VD) deficiency has been suggested as a risk factor for cancer. One recognized mechanism is that the low-serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) of VD deficiency reduces intratumoral 25(OH)D conversion to 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25D, the hormonal form of VD), compromising 1,25D-VD receptor (VDR) antitumoral actions. Bromelain from pineapple stem has been covalently immobilized on different supports to select the more efficient biocatalyst that should be applied toward unstable proteins in real white wine. In this preliminary study, catalytic properties of different immobilized bromelain forms were compared under wine-like conditions, against a synthetic substrate (Bz-Phe-Val-Arg-pNA).Covalent immobilization affected protease kinetic properties, even if all immobilized forms presented both a better substrate affinity and higher half-life (with the exception of a few procedures) with respect to the free enzyme.
