- Periprosthetic fractures (PPF) around the knee can occur after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and anterior femoral notching during the procedure is thought to increase the risk of these fractures.
- A study analyzed 50 patients with PPF and compared them with a control group of 100 patients who underwent TKA without fractures, assessing the relationship between femoral notches and fracture patterns.
- The results showed that the presence of a femoral notch did not significantly influence the fracture pattern, as the occurrence rates of fractures at the prosthesis shield were similar in patients with and without notches.
Purpose: Periprosthetic fracture (PPF) is a devastating complication following primary total knee arthroplasty. Obesity is currently considered a risk factor for many complications in orthopaedics, but there is no evidence in literature about the relationship between obesity and PPF around the knee. The objective of this study was to determine whether obesity is associated with a higher incidence of PPF.
