Silica Nanoparticle/Fluorescent Dye Assembly Capable of Ultrasensitively Detecting Airborne Triacetone Triperoxide: Proof-of-Concept Detection of Improvised Explosive Devices in the Workroom.

We describe the proof of concept of a portable testing setup for the detection of triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a common component in improvised explosive devices. The system allows for field testing and generation of real-time results to test for TATP vapor traces in air by simply using circulation of the air samples through the sensing mechanism under the air conditioning system of an ordinary room. In this way, the controlled trapping of the analyte in the chemical sensor gives reliable results at extremely low concentrations of TATP in air under real-life conditions, suitable for daily use in luggage storage for airlines or a locker room for a major sporting event.

Effect of high low dose of dexamethasone on clinical worsening in patients hospitalised with moderate or severe COVID-19 pneumonia: an open-label, randomised clinical trial.

Background: Low-dose dexamethasone demonstrated clinical improvement in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) needing oxygen therapy; however, evidence on the efficacy of high-dose dexamethasone is limited.

Methods: We performed a randomised, open-label, controlled trial involving hospitalised patients with confirmed COVID-19 pneumonia needing oxygen therapy. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive low-dose dexamethasone (6 mg once daily for 10 days) or high-dose dexamethasone (20 mg once daily for 5 days, followed by 10 mg once daily for an additional 5 days).

Synthesis of Catechol Derived Rosamine Dyes and Their Reactivity toward Biogenic Amines.

Functional organic dyes play a key role in many fields, namely in biotechnology and medical diagnosis. Herein, we report two novel 2,3- and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl substituted rosamines ( and , respectively) that were successfully synthesized through a microwave-assisted protocol. The best reaction yields were obtained for rosamine , which also showed the most interesting photophysical properties, specially toward biogenic amines (BAs).

Mortality after thyroid surgery, insignificant or still an issue?

Background: Thyroidectomy is considered to be a safe procedure. Although very uncommon, death may occur after thyroid resection. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and causes of death after thyroidectomy and the associated risk factors in the modern era of thyroid surgery.

CYP2D6 polymorphism screening in a selected population of Spain (La Alpujarra): no effect of geographical isolation.

Background: There is growing interest in the CYP2D6 gene because of its key role in the metabolism of numerous commonly used drugs.

Aim: We compared the frequency of the most frequent null CYP2D6 alleles (CYP2D6*3, CYP2D6*4,CYP2D6*5, CYP2D6*6, CYP2D6*7 and CYP2D6*8) between individuals from the Spanish population and from La Alpujarra.

Subjects And Methods: The present study comprises Spanish cohort (n = 185) and from La Alpujarra (n = 104).

Characterization of wet precipitation by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The purpose of this study is to assess the composition of wet precipitation in three sites of the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre. Besides the variables usually considered, such as pH, conductivity, major ions (Cl(-), NO(3)(-), F(-), SO(4)(2-), Na(+), K(+), Mg(2+), NH(4)(+) and Ca(2+)) and metallic elements (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni), the suspended matter was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), with energy dispersive system (EDS), for better identification of possible anthropogenic material in this wet precipitation. Results showed an alkaline pH in the samples analyzed and higher concentrations for Na(+), Cl(-) and SO(4)(2-).
