Appropriateness of Medication Prescribing in Hospitalized Older Adults in a Tertiary Teaching Hospital in the Philippines: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: The prescribing of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) is a major health problem among older adults because of the high risk of adverse drug events. The number of older adults in the Philippines is increasing, and little is known about medication prescribing in this population.

Objectives: Our objective was to determine the prevalence of and factors associated with PIM in older patients admitted to a tertiary teaching hospital.

Dementia studies in Chinese populations.

Variations in the prevalence of dementia in different ethnic groups have been reported worldwide, and a number of reviews have provided a picture of epidemiological studies in dementia research. However, little is known about epidemiological studies in Chinese populations. In this review, we searched PubMed and the Web of Science for original research articles published in English up to July 2013 on the prevalence, incidence, risk factors, and prognosis of dementia in Chinese populations worldwide.

Clinical trials of potential antidepressants: to what extent are the elderly represented: a review.

Background: There is widespread use of antidepressants in the elderly population. The principle of treatment of depression, however, is derived mostly from studies employing young adults and healthy elderly. This article reviews the literature on the extent to which the elderly are represented in clinical trials of potential antidepressants.

Sleep problems in a very old population: drug use and clinical correlates.

Background: Complaints of disturbed or dissatisfied sleep are common among older people. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of sleep problems in very old persons and its relation to physical and mental health and drug use.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis of sleep problems in a population of old persons living in Stockholm, Sweden.
