Unlabelled: Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) is a rare hereditary systemic autoinflammatory disease (SAID). Treatment is based on corticosteroids, but often requires the addition of a biologic drug (anti-TNF agent, IL-1 receptor antagonist, etc) to achieve symptom control. The addition of the second drug is not clearly defined and must take into account the characteristics and preferences of the patient.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of two common genetic variations (Q192R and L55M) in the paraoxonase-1 (PON1) gene on the risk of atherothrombotic stroke.
  • It involved 28 stroke patients and 29 control subjects, analyzing their genotypic frequencies and PON1 enzyme activities, revealing no significant differences in paraoxonase activity between the two groups.
  • Results indicated that these genetic polymorphisms and PON1 enzyme activity do not appear to be risk factors for atherothrombotic stroke, challenging previous associations with cardiovascular diseases.
