Aims: A high prevalence of prolonged QT interval duration has been observed among haemodialysis (HD) patients. The aim of this cases series was to describe the association of various risk factors with total mortality and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in this population.

Methods And Results: One hundred and twenty-two patients undergoing HD, [median: age 71.

The evolution of home dialysis marked the main steps in the progress of renal replacement therapy. From the origins when home hemodialysis was often the only alternative to death, to the advent and widespread use of peritoneal dialysis, the dream of kidney transplant as a solution to all problems (at least in the young), and ultimately the profound social and organizational changes that have led to a drastic reduction of home hemodialysis, we arrive at the present with the rediscovery of the clinical, rehabilitative and economic advantages of home dialysis. Seven experts from five different centers with different expertise in home dialysis report their opinions on the future of home dialysis in a ''noncontroversial controversy''.

Objective: To evaluate oxidative stress in uremia and dialysis and chromogranin A, a stress hormone that could be related to oxidative processes.

Methods: Plasma oxidative stress biomarkers (-SH, 8-OHdG, and ox-LDL) and chromogranin A were measured in 89 outpatients (21 uremic patients, 17 in peritoneal dialysis, and 51 in haemodialysis), and in 18 subjects with normal renal function.

Results: -SH groups were significantly reduced in heamodialysis, peritoneal, and uremic patients as compared with the control group (p=0.

Aims: Haemodialysis (HD) therapy represents a unique model to test in vivo, in humans, the effects of changes in plasma ionic concentrations. Episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) often occur during the treatment. We investigated the effects of HD-induced electrolyte variations on atrial electrophysiology by analysing ECG P-wave duration (PWd), which reflects atrial conduction velocity (CV), and simulated atrial action potential (AP).

Aims: To assess the effect of different combinations of potassium and calcium concentrations on QT interval in the dialysis bath in uraemic patients.

Methods And Results: Sixteen haemodialysis (HD) patients underwent a 24 h Holter recording before and during HD sessions with six randomized combinations of electrolytes concentrations of the dialysis bath (K(+), 2 and 3 mmol/L; Ca(2+), 1.25, 1.

Background: The aim of our study was to evaluate whether convective (haemofiltration, Hf) and diffusive (haemodialysis, Hd) dialysis techniques induce different patterns of long- and short-term autonomic adjustments in haemodynamically stable dialysis patients.

Methods: Ten haemodynamically stable Hd patients were studied. Each patient underwent a block of six Hd sessions, then was switched to six Hf.
