Article Synopsis
  • Heart transplant patients with donor-specific antibodies (DSAs) face a higher risk of rejection, but some do not show antibody-mediated rejection despite having graft dysfunction.
  • A study involved 216 participants undergoing serial evaluations like endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) and echocardiograms to understand the relationship between DSAs, rejection types, and long-term outcomes.
  • Results indicated that both antibody-mediated rejection (pAMR+) and DSA-related left ventricle dysfunction significantly correlated with increased mortality and prolonged heart dysfunction, particularly if they occurred within the first six months after transplant.

Background: There is significant variability among pathologists in the histopathological interpretation of the endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) for acute cellular rejection (ACR), and assessment of variability in the interpretation of antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) has not been reported. In contemporary practice, the strategy of allograft surveillance with donor-derived cell-free DNA (dd-cfDNA) compared to EMB has not been compared with a focus on long-term clinical outcomes beyond acute rejection (AR).

Methods: The Genomic Research Alliance for Transplantation is a multicenter, prospective cohort study that enrolled patients from 2015 to 2020.

Constructed wetlands are increasingly used as a solution to treat polluted water in natural environments. Located in the Albufera de València Natural Park, a constructed wetland was built in 2009 as a pilot project to act as an intermediary between low-quality waters and the largest protected coastal lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula. With a unique dataset spanning more than a decade (2009-2023), this study assessed changes in plankton communities both spatially (comparing six sampling sites) and temporally (comparing four periods of years).

This work focused on the co-encapsulation and simultaneous co-delivery of three different neuroprotective drugs in PLGA (poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres for the treatment of glaucoma. For formulation optimization, dexamethasone (anti-inflammatory) and ursodeoxycholic acid (anti-apoptotic) were co-loaded by the solid-in-oil-in-water emulsion solvent extraction-evaporation technique as a first step. The incorporation of a water-soluble co-solvent (ethanol) and different amounts of dexamethasone resulted critical for the encapsulation of the neuroprotective agents and their initial release.

When exploring the challenges of restoring degraded lakes, we often do not observe the expected results despite executing all planned activities. Our study elucidates the reasons that impede the recovery of submerged macrophytes despite ameliorated light conditions. When prolonged lake degradation occurs, subsequent efforts to increase light availability often prove insufficient, resulting in a persistent turbid water state.

Chemokines guide immune cells during their response against pathogens and tumors. Various techniques exist to determine chemokine production, but none to identify cells that directly sense chemokines in vivo. We have generated CCL3-EASER (ErAse, SEnd, Receive) mice that simultaneously report for Ccl3 transcription and translation, allow identifying Ccl3-sensing cells, and permit inducible deletion of Ccl3-producing cells.

Introduction: The health crisis of the last 3 years has revealed the weaknesses of the child and family support system based on the professional use of digital resources in social agencies. This study addresses three aims: to examine the level of professional digital competence; to analyze the user profiles in a variety of digital resources; and to test the impact of level of competences and user profiles on four aspects: professional practice, family satisfaction with the services, child and family wellbeing, and family autonomy in the exercise of the parenting role.

Methods: Participants were 148 practitioners from social agencies who voluntarily responded to an online survey with 47 questions.

Glaucoma is a multifactorial pathology involving the immune system. The subclinical immune response plays a homeostatic role in healthy situations, but in pathological situations, it produces imbalances. Optical coherence tomography detects immune cells in the vitreous as hyperreflective opacities and these are subsequently characterised by computational analysis.

Background: The effects of adverse life events on physical and psychological health, with DNA methylation (DNAm) as a critical underlying mechanism, have been extensively studied. However, the epigenetic resemblance between mother and child in the context of neglectful caregiving, and whether it may be shaped by the emotional impact of maternal stressful events and the duration of co-residence (indexed by child age), remains unknown. The present study examined mother-child similarity in methylation profiles, considering the potential effect of mother adversity, mother empathy, neglect-control group, child age (an index of years of mother-child co-residence), and mother age.

Background: Severe primary graft dysfunction (PGD) is a major cause of early mortality after heart transplant, but the impact of donor organ preservation conditions on severity of PGD and survival has not been well characterized.

Methods: Data from US adult heart-transplant recipients in the Global Utilization and Registry Database for Improved Heart Preservation-Heart Registry (NCT04141605) were analyzed to quantify PGD severity, mortality, and associated risk factors. The independent contributions of organ preservation method (traditional ice storage vs controlled hypothermic preservation) and ischemic time were analyzed using propensity matching and logistic regression.

Some research has shown that expectations modulate people's economic dishonesty. These studies have allowed their participants to precisely establish the dishonest extra financial gain, without threatening their image of honesty. In this article, we show that in situations where our economic dishonesty is driven by hard-to-quantify motivators such as level of effort, it is difficult to change the categorization of (dishonest) judgments.

Background: Black heart transplant patients are at higher risk of acute rejection (AR) and death than White patients. We hypothesized that this risk may be associated with higher levels of donor-derived cell-free DNA (dd-cfDNA) and cell-free mitochondrial DNA.

Methods: The Genomic Research Alliance for Transplantation is a multicenter, prospective, longitudinal cohort study.

Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) is a significant determinant of long-term survival in heart transplant recipients. Standard CAV screening typically utilizes invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Quantitative flow ratio (QFR) is a computational method for functional testing of coronary stenosis, and may add diagnostic value to ICA in assessing CAV.

Implementing parenting programs in real-world community settings is fundamental to making effective programs widely available and consequently improving the lives of children and their families. Despite the literature acknowledging that the high-quality implementation of parenting programs is particularly challenging in real-world community settings, little is known about how the programs are implemented in these settings. This scoping review followed the methodological framework described by the Joanna Briggs Institute to map evidence on how evidence-based parenting programs have been implemented under real-world conditions.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) continue to be the main cause of death in our country. Adequate control of lipid metabolism disorders is a key challenge in cardiovascular prevention that is far from being achieved in real clinical practice. There is a great heterogeneity in the reports of lipid metabolism from Spanish clinical laboratories, which may contribute to its poor control.

The regular consumption of citrus fruits by humans has been associated with lower incidence of chronic-degenerative diseases, especially those mediated by free radicals. Most of the health-promoting properties of citrus fruits derive from their antioxidant content of carotenoids and ascorbic acid (ASC). In the current work we have investigated the scavenging (against hydroxyl radical) and quenching capacities (against singlet oxygen) of four different carotenoid extracts of citrus fruits in the presence or absence of ASC (μM range) in organic solvent, aqueous solution, micelles and in an innovative biomimicking liposomal system of animal cell membrane (AML).
