Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a frequently encountered condition in clinical practice. After conventional endoscopy, the cause of anemia remains unknown in up to 40% of patients.

Objective: To evaluate prospectively the diagnostic efficacy of a systematic endoscopic approach to IDA and to compare the diagnostic yield of videocapsule endoscopy (VCE) and CT-enteroclysis in endoscopy-negative patients.

Background: The prognostic impact of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the hypertensive population at low-medium risk is unknown. In this study, we evaluated the prognostic relevance of MetS in hypertensive patients at low-medium risk.

Methods: The occurrence of nonfatal and fatal cardiac and cerebrovascular events was evaluated in 802 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension at low-medium risk according to the 2003 World Health Organization/International Society of Hypertension statement on the management of hypertension.

Background: Although visceral hypersensitivity is a common feature among patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), studies on somatic sensitivity have given controversial results.

Aim: To assess visceral sensitivity in response to isotonic rectal distensions and somatic sensitivity at different layers of the body wall (skin, subcutis, and muscle) in patients with IBS and fibromyalgia (FM), within and outside the area of abdominal pain referral.

Materials And Methods: We studied 10 patients with IBS, 5 patients with FM, 9 patients with IBS+FM, and 9 healthy controls.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the cardiovascular outcome in apparently responder hypertensive patients with responder and masked hypertension, and in apparently resistant hypertensive patients with false and true resistant hypertension.

Methods: The occurrence of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events was evaluated in 340 patients with responder hypertension (clinic blood pressure [BP] <140/90 mm Hg and daytime BP <135/85 mm Hg), 126 with masked hypertension (clinic BP <140/90 mm Hg and daytime BP >135 or 85 mm Hg), 146 with false resistant hypertension (clinic BP >or=140 or 90 mm Hg and daytime BP <135/85 mm Hg), and 130 with true resistant hypertension (clinic BP >or=140 or 90 mm Hg and daytime BP >135 or 85 mm Hg).

Results: During follow-up period (4.

Background: Visceral hypersensitivity is common in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) patients, and symptoms exacerbate postprandially. Yet the effects of nutrients on visceral sensitivity and symptoms in these patients have not been fully explored.

Aims: To evaluate the differences of visceral sensitivity and symptoms in healthy subjects and IBS patients during fasting and intraduodenal lipids infusion.

Background & Aims: Symptoms in functional dyspepsia have been related to impaired accommodation and hypersensitivity of the proximal stomach. We hypothesized that identification of putative antral dysfunctions provides a more comprehensive pathophysiological interpretation.

Methods: In 30 patients with functional dyspepsia and 22 healthy subjects, 2 consecutive studies were performed.

Background & Aims: We have previously shown that patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have impaired transit of intestinal gas loads. Because abnormal gas retention can be experimentally reproduced in healthy subjects by pharmacological inhibition of gut motility, we hypothesized that impaired gas transit and retention can be reciprocally corrected by pharmacologically stimulating intestinal propulsion.

Methods: In 28 patients with abdominal bloating (14 IBS, 14 functional bloating) and in 14 healthy subjects, gas evacuation and perception of jejunal gas infusion (12 mL/min) were measured.
