Background: Metabolic syndrome poses a significant public health challenge globally, particularly among older adults. Dietary patterns play a crucial role in the development and management of metabolic syndrome. However, to our knowledge, no evidence exists regarding the association between dietary patterns and metabolic syndrome among the Mexican older adult population.

Since the discovery of DNA as the genetic material, scientists have been investigating how the information contained in this biological polymer is transmitted from generation to generation. X-ray crystallography, and more recently, cryo-electron microscopy techniques have been instrumental in providing essential information about the structure, functions and interactions of the DNA and the protein machinery (replisome) responsible for its replication. In this chapter, we highlight several works that describe the structure and structure-function relationships of the core components of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic replisomes.

Physical activity (PA) levels, as well as symptoms of anxiety and depression, can affect adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) impacting people's health. This study aimed to evaluate the association between PA levels, clinical symptoms of anxiety and depression, and adherence to ART in people living with HIV (PLHIV). A cross-sectional study, including 125 PLHIV was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between cognitive reserve (CR) and subjective memory complaints (SMC) in functionally independent older women aged 60 and above.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 269 participants who completed cognitive evaluations and questionnaires about their memory.
  • Findings suggest that lower CR is associated with a higher likelihood of experiencing SMC, regardless of other factors like cognitive function, depression symptoms, or daily living activities.

  • MIS-C is a serious inflammatory condition that can occur in children 2 to 4 weeks after infection with SARS-CoV-2, characterized by inflammation and heart issues.
  • Despite being recognized for over two years, effective treatments for MIS-C are still being studied.
  • The review explores the potential of natural compounds that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as possible treatments to mitigate hyperinflammation associated with MIS-C.

The demographic transition makes it necessary to establish new recommendations about the components that are most affected by aging, such as: muscle mass, fat mass, bone mass, muscle strength, and physical performance. Exercise has been identified as a factor that improves those conditions. The aim of this review is to synthetize and analyze the results of exercise interventions on muscle mass, fat mass, bone mass, strength and physical performance in community dwelling older adults (OA).

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has continued to be the subject of study since its discovery nearly 40 years ago. Significant advances in research and intake of antiretroviral therapy (ART) have slowed the progression and appearance of the disease symptoms and the incidence of concomitant diseases, which are the leading cause of death in HIV+ persons. However, the prolongation of ART is closely related to chronic degenerative diseases and pathologies caused by oxidative stress (OS) and alterations in lipid metabolism (increased cholesterol levels), both of which are conditions of ART.

Pomegranate is a polyphenol-rich fruit. Studies have shown that extracts prepared from its juice or from different parts of the pomegranate plant have various biological activities including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, cardioprotective, and antidiabetic. The therapeutic potential has been attributed to various phytochemicals, including ellagic acid, punicic acid, flavonoids, anthocyanidins, anthocyanins, flavonols, and flavones.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has increased worldwide, and since 2012, prevalence of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia has increased in Mexico. To assess the prevalence of MetS, and its relationship with sociodemographic and lifestyle factors among Mexican adults. Analytical cross-sectional study nationally representative, carried out on Mexican adults (≥20-year-old adults of both sexes;  = 4595).

An elderly person who lives alone must often be autonomous and self-sufficient in daily living activities. We explored if living alone and marital status were associated with mild cognitive impairment and low cognitive reserve in a sample of Mexican women aged 60+ attending continuing education courses using a cross-sectional design. Objective cognitive functions were assessed using the MMSE and Blessed Dementia Scale.

: The use of health services is a complex behavioral phenomenon affected by multiple factors (availability, distance, cost, quality, attitudes, cultural beliefs, socioeconomic characteristics, and individuals' self-perception of health). Mexico has a segmented health system, and the access to it depends on the labor insertion and the population's ability to pay. : To assess association between use of health services and cardiovascular and metabolic syndrome risk factors among Mexican adults.

High-density lipoproteins (HDL) comprise a heterogeneous family of lipoprotein particles divided into subclasses that are determined by density, size and surface charge as well as protein composition. Epidemiological studies have suggested an inverse correlation between High-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and the risk of cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis. HDLs promote reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) and have several atheroprotective functions such as anti-inflammation, anti-thrombosis, and anti-oxidation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and its associated factors in the elderly population of Mexico, finding a high prevalence of 72.9%.
  • A sample of 516 elderly individuals (≥65 years) was analyzed, highlighting significant markers of MetS like hypertension (92.4%) and hyperglycemia (71.1%).
  • The results indicated that education level, smoking status, and geographic location in Mexico influenced the prevalence and components of MetS, with BMI being the key determinant.
