Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients that fail to achieve a complete metabolic response with frontline immunochemotherapy have a poor prognosis. Genomic profiling has led to a broader understanding of the molecular drivers in DLBCL, but it is unknown how well current classifiers identify patients that will experience primary treatment resistance (PTR). Using whole exome and RNA sequencing data from newly diagnosed DLBCL patients, we evaluated the genomic landscape of PTR and compared it to that of non-PTR DLBCL.

Biomarkers of Frailty in Patients with Advanced Chronic Liver Disease Undergoing a Multifactorial Intervention Consisting of Home Exercise, Branched-Chain Amino Acids, and Probiotics.

Frailty in cirrhosis or advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD) is a relevant prognostic factor. In the present study, we aimed to analyze potential biomarkers associated with frailty and its improvement in patients with ACLD. We analyzed the serum of outpatients with ACLD who participated in a previous study (Román, Hepatol Commun 2024) in which frailty was assessed using the liver frailty index (LFI), and patients who were frail or prefrail were randomized to a multifactorial intervention (home exercise, branched-chain amino acids, and probiotics) or control for 12 months.

Metagenomic Study Reveals Phage-Bacterial Interactome Dynamics in Gut and Oral Microbiota in Pancreatic Diseases.

Individuals with pancreatic-related health conditions usually show lower diversity and different composition of bacterial and viral species between the gut and oral microbiomes compared to healthy individuals. We performed a thorough microbiome analysis, using deep shotgun sequencing of stool and saliva samples obtained from patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP), pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), and healthy controls (HCs).We observed similar microbiota composition at the species level in both the gut and oral samples in PDAC patients compared to HCs, among which the most distinctive finding was that the abundance of oral-originated species did not differ between the oral and the gut samples.

Invasive Buttonweed (Asteraceae) Is Halotolerant and Has High Potential for Dispersal by Endozoochory.

Buttonweed () is native to South Africa but invasive in wetlands in Europe, North America, and Australasia, where it excludes native plants. Despite being dry-fruited, field studies suggest migratory waterbirds can disperse its seeds via gut passage (endozoochory), aiding its expansion. To explore the potential for endozoochory in different regions and habitats, we collected seeds from six populations in Spain, Sweden, and the UK.

The potential of using image-guided photodynamic therapy (ig-PDT) for cancer, especially with highly biocompatible fluorescent agents free of heavy atoms, is well recognized. This is due to key advantages related to minimizing adverse side effects associated with standard cancer chemotherapy. However, this theragnostic approach is strongly limited by the lack of synthetically-accessible and easily-modulable chemical scaffolds, enabling the rapid design and construction of advanced agents for clinical ig-PDT.

Pharmacodynamic changes in tumor and immune cells drive iberdomide's clinical mechanisms of activity in relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma.

Iberdomide is a next-generation cereblon (CRBN)-modulating agent in the clinical development in multiple myeloma (MM). The analysis of biomarker samples from relapsed/refractory patients enrolled in CC-220-MM-001 (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02773030), a phase 1/2 study, shows that iberdomide treatment induces significant target substrate degradation in tumors, including in immunomodulatory agent (IMiD)-refractory patients or those with low CRBN levels.

Home exercise, branched-chain amino acids, and probiotics improve frailty in cirrhosis: A randomized clinical trial.

Background: Frailty is a predictive factor of hospitalization, falls, and mortality in patients with cirrhosis, regardless of the degree of liver failure. The aim was to analyze whether a multifactorial intervention consisting of home-based exercise, branched-chain amino acids, and a multistrain probiotic can improve frailty in these patients.

Methods: Outpatients with cirrhosis were classified according to the Liver Frailty Index (LFI).

Exploring the Associations of Inflammatory and Oxidative Stress Biomarkers with Pancreatic Diseases: An Observational and Mendelian Randomisation Study.

Identifying biomarkers linked to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and chronic pancreatitis (CP) is crucial for early detection, treatment, and prevention. Association analyses of 10 serological biomarkers involved in cell signalling (IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10), oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activities, total glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels), and intestinal permeability proteins (zonulin, I-FABP2) were conducted across PDAC ( = 12), CP ( = 21) and control subjects ( = 23). A Mendelian randomisation (MR) approach was used to assess causality of the identified significant associations in two large genetic cohorts (FinnGen and UK Biobank).

This comprehensive review examines the role of fish thrombocytes, cells considered functionally analogous to platelets in terms of coagulation, but which differ in their origin and morphology. Despite the evolutionary distance between teleosts and mammals, genomic studies reveal conserved patterns in blood coagulation, although there are exceptions such as the absence of factors belonging to the contact system. Beyond coagulation, fish thrombocytes have important immunological functions.

Background: While accepted indications for the use of inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) in patients with a venous thromboembolism (VTE) have remained stable, their use continues to be frequent. Objectives: We here report a FRCP spread across a 777-bed referral hospital located in Burgos, Spain, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patients/methods: In April 2021, an FRCP isolate (MIC = 64 mg/L, E-test®) from a hospitalised patient was detected.

In rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovium, ATP, and ADP are released, sparking inflammation. Ectoenzymes CD39 and CD73 metabolize these purine nucleotides, generating anti-inflammatory adenosine. Therefore, dysregulated CD39 and CD73 expression may impact RA development.

In this work, strategies within Analytical Quality by Design (AQbD) with tools of the Process Analytical Technology (PAT) were used in the development of a head space-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) procedure for the multiresidue analysis of four phthalic acid esters, benzyl butyl phthalate, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, dibutyl phthalate and diethyl phthalate (regulated by Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011). The approach is based on the fact that the intended quality of the resulting chromatograms is defined in terms of the loadings on the sample mode of a Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC2) decomposition. These loadings are the ones used for the inversion of a Partial Least Squares (PLS2) prediction model that has been previously fitted.

Formylation as a Chemical Tool to Modulate the Performance of Photosensitizers Based on Boron Dipyrromethene Dimers.

Heavy-atom-free photosensitizers are envisioned as the next generation of photoactive molecules for photo-theragnosis. In this approach, and after suitable irradiation, a single molecular scaffold is able to visualize and kill tumour cells by fluorescence signalling and photodynamic therapy (PDT), respectively, with minimal side effects. In this regard, BODIPY-based orthogonal dimers have irrupted as suitable candidates for this aim.

Inferior Vena Cava Filters: Adherence to Clinical Practice Guidelines Recommendations, Retrieval Rates, and Filter Complications in a Tertiary Hospital.

The present study evaluated the adherence to guideline recommendations regarding the indication for inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) placement, retrieval rates, complications, thrombotic recurrences, and mortality. Patients in whom an IVCF was placed between 2015 and 2020 in a tertiary hospital were retrospectively included. We considered absolute indication of IVCF placement if all the guidelines evaluated agreed on the indication, relative indication if only some guidelines recommended it and without indication if none of the evaluated guidelines recommended it.
