In this article, sugarcane molasses and agave juice were compared as potential feedstocks for producing bioethanol in Mexico in terms of their environmental impact and economic factors. Life cycle assessment (LCA) using SimaPro was carried out to calculate environmental impacts by using a cradle-to-gate approach. A preliminary economic analysis was performed to determine the economic feasibility of the studied options.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on finding sustainable methods for methanol production amid rising demand and resource competition, specifically analyzing the process using olive pomace versus traditional natural gas.
  • A life cycle assessment was conducted using SimaPro software to evaluate the environmental impacts of producing methanol from olive pomace, which includes olive production, oil extraction, and the methanol production process itself.
  • Results showed that methanol production from olive pomace had a higher environmental impact in most categories compared to natural gas production, indicating potential inefficiencies in the processes involved.
