Differential expression of determinants of glucocorticoid sensitivity in androgen-dependent and androgen-independent human prostate cancer cell lines.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used for the treatment of hormone refractory prostate cancer. However, few data are available on the expression and regulation of glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors (GR and MR) and 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11beta-HSD) 1 and -2 activities in prostate cancer cells. Here we show that GR is expressed in both the androgen-independent PC-3 cell line and, at very low levels, in the androgen-dependent LNCaP cells, and MR is expressed in both cell lines.

Aluminium blunts the proliferative response and increases apoptosis of cultured human cells: putative relationship to Alzheimer's disease.

Aluminium (Al) has been investigated as a neurotoxic substance. Al ranks among the potential environmental risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Epidemiological studies tested the relationship between Al in drinking water and AD, showing a significant correlation between elevated levels of monomeric Al in water and AD, although data to date remain inconclusive with respect to total Al.

Neuroendocrine immunity in patients with Alzheimer's disease: toward translational epigenetics.

The emerging domain of epigenetics in molecular medicine finds application for a variety of patient populations. Here, we present fundamental neuroendocrine immune evidence obtained in patients with senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type (sDAT), and discuss the implications of these data from the viewpoint of translational epigenetics of Alzheimer's disease. We followed 18 subjects with mild sDAT treated with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, and 10 control subjects matched for age in a repeated measure design every six months for 18 months.

Physiologic modulation of natural killer cell activity as an index of Alzheimer's disease progression.

Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) are characterized by an altered sensitivity to cortisol-mediated modulation of circulating lymphocytes. Longitudinal studies are needed to address the clinical applicability of these abnormalities as prognostic factors. Therefore, we designed a longitudinal study to address the clinical applicability of physiologic modulation of Natural Killer (NK) cell activity as a prognostic factor in AD.

There is evidence that aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be protective agents against cancer in the gastrointestinal tract. These effects are particularly well documented for the colon and rectum. Some epidemiological and experimental studies have suggested that aspirin could also be a chemopreventive agent against breast cancer.

Psychoneuroimmunology: new avenues of research for the twenty-first century.

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) investigates the relations between the psychophysiological and immunophysiological dimensions of living beings. PNI brings together researchers in a number of scientific and medical disciplines, including psychology, the neurosciences, immunology, physiology, pharmacology, psychiatry, behavioral medicine, infectious diseases, and rheumatology. All are scientists with profound interest in interactions between the nervous and immune systems, and the relation between behavior and health.

Mental deterioration correlates with response of natural killer (NK) cell activity to physiological modifiers in patients with short history of Alzheimer's disease.

Natural killer (NK) cell activity of peripheral blood mononuclear (PBM) cells was measured in 16 subjects with mild to moderate senile dementia of Alzheimer's type (sDAT) chosen for short history of disease and no medication, and in 17 age- and sex-matched controls. Levels of cytotoxicity at baseline and after PBM cell exposure to modifiers either negative (cortisol 10(-6) M) or positive (rIL-2 650 IU/ml and rIFN-gamma 100 UI/ml, respectively) were related to indices of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) function and Gottfries Bråne Rating Scale (GBS) score for mental deterioration. Spontaneous NK cell activity was not significantly different in sDAT subjects vs controls.
