A great number of free radicals have a negative impact on the human body, and an increased interest in the identification of new natural molecules with antioxidant properties has emerged due to concerns about synthetic antioxidants. Here, the antioxidant effect of four exo-polysaccharides (EPS) extracts obtained from submerged cultivation of Nothophellinus andinopatagonicus and Pseudoinonotus crustosus (N and P, respectively) in two culture media (M1 and M2) at 2 concentrations (100 and 250 µg/ml) was studied; then, its relation with the chemical composition of the EPS was evaluated. To assess the antioxidant activities of the extracts, several in vitro assays were performed: DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging, ferric-reducing antioxidant power, chelating ability on ferrous ions, and inhibition of the lipid peroxidation.

Selenium (Se) is an important trace element and its intake is usually lower than the daily minimum amount required for humans; hence, there is a demand on the design of Se biofortification strategies. Here, the genetic traits known to be associated with Plant-Growth Promotion (PGP) and Se biotransformation of Exiguobacterium sp.

A study was undertaken to disclose changes in the resin composition of P. austrocedri-infected individuals, including naturally infected and artificially inoculated trees, compared with healthy A.

We have previously reported the functional expression of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor Toll-like receptor 4 on thyroid follicular cells. Here we investigated the effect of LPS in TPO expression and analyzed the mechanisms involved.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLipopolysaccharide (LPS), a glycolipid found in the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria, exerts pleiotropic biological effects in different cell types. LPS is mainly recognized by the Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4/MD2/Cluster of differentiation 14 complex (CD14). We previously demonstrated that LPS produced a direct action on thyroid cells, including up-regulation of thyroglobulin gene expression.

The aim of this paper was to analyze the direct influence of a long-term exposition to NO on parameters of thyroid hormone biosynthesis in FRTL-5 cells.
Design: Cells were treated with the NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) for 24-72 h.
Nitric oxide (NO) is a free radical that mediates a wide array of cell functions. It is generated from l-arginine by NO-synthase (NOS). Expression of NOS isoforms has been demonstrated in thyroid cells.

LPS has been proposed as an etiopathogenic agent in autoimmune diseases. However, whether LPS affects the expression of autoantigens has not been explored.
