Human infection with monkeypox virus (MPXV) is characterized by a pox-like rash in various areas, including the anogenital region, and is accompanied by fever, headaches, fatigue, myalgias, and lymphadenopathy. These symptoms may occur a few days before the rash or simultaneously. Nonspecific and vague symptoms, particularly in the recent outbreak of the MPXV, have led to unrecognized or very mild prodromes, which can delay diagnosis.

Materials/methods: Patients from four centers in three different countries were retrospectively screened. Those with a minimum 1-year follow-up were included.
The whale shark () is an endangered marine fish species which can be adversely affected by the fishing activities of the industrial purse seine fleet targeting tropical tuna. Tuna tend to aggregate around all types of floating objects, including whale sharks. We analyzed and modeled the spatial distribution and environmental preferences of whale sharks based on the presence and absence data from fishing observations in the Atlantic Ocean.

Unexpected D. saccharalis damage was observed to Bt maize events TC1507 (expressing Cry1F) and MON 89034 × MON 88017 (expressing Cry1A.

The locus Als1 for sulfonylurea resistance was mapped and the resistant allele was characterized at the molecular level. Sulfonylurea (SU) resistance in soybean is controlled by Als1, a semi-dominant allele obtained by EMS mutagenesis over the cultivar Williams 82.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFImisun and CLPlus are two imidazolinone tolerance traits in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) determined by the expression of two alleles at the locus Ahasl1. Both traits differed in their tolerance level to imazapyr -a type of imidazolinone herbicide- when aboveground biomass is considered, but the concomitant herbicide effect over the root system has not been reported.

Methods: A bibliographical review from 2008 up to January 2011 in PubMed, EMBASE and LILACS was undertaken. Were used the keywords: animal models, burns and rats.
Background: Hypertrophic scar was first described over 100 years ago; PubMed has more than 1,000 references on the topic. Nevertheless prevention and treatment remains poor, because 1) there has been no validated animal model; 2) human scar tissue, which is impossible to obtain in a controlled manner, has been the only source for study; 3) tissues typically have been homogenized, mixing cell populations; and 4) gene-by-gene studies are incomplete.
Methodology/principal Findings: We have assembled a system that overcomes these barriers and permits the study of genome-wide gene expression in microanatomical locations, in shallow and deep partial-thickness wounds, and pigmented and non-pigmented skin, using the Duroc(pigmented fibroproliferative)/Yorkshire(non-pigmented non-fibroproliferative) porcine model.

Aim: The present study was designed to investigate the effects of estradiol-ethylenediamine derivative on perfusion pressure and coronary resistance in rats. An additional aim was to identify the molecular mechanisms involved.
Methods: The Langendorff model was used to measure perfusion pressure and coronary resistance changes in isolated rat heart after estradiol-ethylenediamine derivative alone and following compounds; tamoxifen (estrogen receptor antagonist), prazosin (alpha1 adrenoreceptor antagonist), metoprolol (selective beta1 receptor blocker), indomethacin (prostanglandin synthesis inhibitor) and nifedipine (L-type calcium-channel inhibitor).
The most potent peanut allergens, Ara h 2 and Ara h 6, were silenced in transgenic plants by RNA interference. Three independent transgenic lines were recovered after microprojectile bombardment, of which two contained single, integrated copies of the transgene. The third line contained multiple copies of the transgene.

MEDLINE was searched to identify and assess economic evaluations (defined as an analysis comparing two or more strategies, involving the assessment of both costs and consequences) related to "home care" exclusively for the elderly (65 years or more) and to critically appraise the methodology using five accepted principles used worldwide for conducting economic evaluations. Twenty-four economic evaluations of "home care" for the elderly were identified and the articles were assessed.
