Circulating catecholamines are associated with biobehavioral factors and anxiety symptoms in head and neck cancer patients.

Studies have shown that stress-related catecholamines may affect cancer progression. However, little is known about catecholamine secretion profiles in head and neck cancer patients. The present study investigated plasma norepinephrine and epinephrine levels in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients and patients with oral leukoplakia, as well as their association with clinicopathological and biobehavioral variables and anxiety symptoms.

Childhood trauma is predictive for clinical staging, alcohol consumption, and emotional symptoms in patients with head and neck cancer.

Background: Traumatic events in childhood have been associated with the occurrence of anxiety and depression in adulthood. This relation has been investigated in patients with breast cancer; however, it has been little explored in patients with other types of cancer. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of childhood trauma in patients with head and neck cancer and its association with clinicopathological variables and anxiety and depression levels.

Stress hormones concentrations in the normal microenvironment predict risk for chemically induced cancer in rats.

Evidence show that stress hormones can influence cancer progression, but its role in carcinogenesis is poorly understood. In this study, we used a new method based on oral carcinogenesis model in rats to test the hypothesis that physiological levels of stress hormones in the normal tissue microenvironment would have significant predictive value for chemically induced cancer occurrence. Male Wistar rats were submitted to a tongue biopsy for measuring not-stress induced levels of norepinephrine, corticosterone, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the tissue before carcinogenic induction.

Two-Year Clinical Evaluation of a Nanofilled Etch-and-Rinse and a Self-Etch Adhesive System Containing MDPB and Fluoride in Non-carious Cervical Lesions.

Objectives: The aim of this clinical study was to evaluate the performance of restorations for non-carious cervical lesions performed with a two-step etch-and-rinse or with a two-step self-etch adhesive.

Materials And Methods: The teeth to be restored (15 patients, N = 90 restorations) were randomly assigned into 3 groups (n = 30), according to the adhesive system: group 1 (G1): Peak LC Bond; group 2 (G2): Clearfil Protect Bond; and group 3 (G3): prior selective acid etching of the enamel margins before bonding with Clearfil Protect Bond. The NCCLs were restored with Amelogen Plus composite resin.

Three-Year Clinical Evaluation of Class I Restorations in Posterior Teeth. Effects of Two Adhesive Systems.

This longitudinal study evaluated the clinical performance of 97 direct class I resin composite restorations after 3 years. The restorations were performed using 2 types of adhesive systems: (1) Adper™ Single Bond Plus (SB) (3M ESPE, 3mespe.com), which is a two-step etch-and-rinse system, and (2) Adper Scotchbond™ SE (SE) (3M ESPE), which is a two-step self-etching system.

Lip Cancer: A Clinicopathological Study and Treatment Outcomes in a 25-Year Experience.

Purpose: There are few clinical studies focusing on treatment outcomes of lip cancer. This study investigated the clinicopathologic variables of a large sample of patients with lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) treated in a reference head and neck cancer center for the past 25 years and analyzed the influence of these variables on treatment outcomes.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective cohort study reviewed the clinical records of patients with LSCC.

Adherence to standard precautions from the standpoint of the Health Belief Model: the practice of recapping needles.

The aim of this study was to apply the Health Belief Model to explain the adherence to the recommendation not to recap needles by dentists and dental assistants of the public health system in a municipality in the State of São Paulo. A questionnaire validated and adapted for the oral health area was used, which included variables related to the frequency of recapping and health beliefs using Likert-type scales. The relationship between beliefs and adherence to the recommendation not to recap needles was obtained by regression analysis.

The aim of this study was to analyze patients with clicking at the end of opening and at the beginning of closing their mouths treated by muscular exercises through chewing and by occlusal splints. Dentists' level of knowledge of the treatment plans for periodontal ligament injuries after dentoalveolar trauma.

This study investigated the level of knowledge held by dentists about the possible treatment plan procedures for periodontal ligament injuries after dentoalveolar trauma. A 5-item self-applied questionnaire was prepared with questions referring to the professional profile of the interviewees and to the treatment plan they would propose for periodontal ligament injuries secondary to dentoalveolar trauma. The questionnaires were filled out by 693 dentists attending the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for Dental Research, and the data obtained were subjected to descriptive analysis.

Effect of disinfection and accelerated aging on color stability of colorless and pigmented facial silicone.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the color stability of a facial silicone with different pigmentations submitted to disinfection and accelerated aging.

Materials And Methods: Sixty replicas were fabricated with the silicone Silastic MDX 4-4210 and divided into three groups: no pigmentation, pigmentation with makeup powder, and pigmentation with ceramic powder. Half the replicas of each group were submitted to disinfection with Efferdent and the other with neutral soap for 60 days (n = 10).

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess, through electromyographic activity (EMG), the silent period (SP) of masseter and anterior temporal muscles in dentate subjects (DS) and complete denture wearers (CDW).

Materials And Methods: The evaluations were performed at the initial and final period of the mastication for the DS group. For the CDW group, the evaluations were performed at the initial period of mastication, with old complete dentures worn for more than 10 years (OCDW) and at the final period of the mastication with new complete dentures (NCDW), 5 months after rehabilitation.

Several local factors that influence the healing process of replanted teeth have been investigated. However, it remains unclear how systemic alterations, such as diabetes mellitus, affect the prognosis of these cases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the healing process of incisors of non-controlled diabetic rats replanted after storage in bovine long shelf-life (UHT) whole milk.

Evaluation of sixth grade primary schoolchildren's knowledge about avulsion and dental reimplantation.

Dental trauma, particularly tooth avulsion, is a frequent cause of tooth loss in children, adolescents, and young adults. The avulsed tooth should be immediately reimplanted in its alveolus. This procedure can be performed by anyone at the accident site and not only by dental surgeons.

Delayed replantation of rat teeth after use of reconstituted powdered milk as a storage medium.

Minimal extraoral dry storage period and moist storage for the avulsed tooth are identified as key steps for the treatment protocol of tooth replantation. Among the possible moist storage media, bovine milk has stood out because of its capacity of preserving the integrity of the periodontal ligament (PDL) fibers. This condition has attracted the attention to investigate the use of powdered milk, which is one of the presentation forms of bovine milk, as a feasible storage medium in cases of delayed tooth replantation.

The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate demineralization around restorations. Class V preparations were made on the buccal and lingual surfaces of each tooth. TPH (Group 1), Fuji II LC (Group 2), Tetric (Group 3), Dyract (Group 4), GS 80 (Group 5) and Chelon Fil (Group 6) were randomly placed in equal numbers of teeth.

Different factors like stress and occlusion can decrease the adaptive capacity of the stomatognathic system and lead to the occurrence of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). The objective of this study was to verify the relation of the variables socio-economic level, schooling, sex and age with the occurrence of temporomandibular dysfunction. The population of this study consisted of a statistically significant sample of subjects of both sexes belonging to different socio-economic classes living in the urban area of the city of Piacatu, São Paulo, Brazil.
