Premise Of The Study: Knowledge about the introduction history (source(s), number and size of introduction events) of an invasive species is a crucial prerequisite to understand invasion success and to facilitate effective and sustainable management approaches, especially for effective biological control. We investigated the introduction history of the Australian legume tree Acacia dealbata in South Africa. Results of this study will not only provide critical information for the management of this species in South Africa, but will also broaden our overall knowledge on the invasion ecology of this globally important invasive tree.

The effect of the postharvest treatment of methyl jasmonate enantiomers in conjunction with ethanol on bioformation of resveratrol and quercetin glycosides in grapes was evaluated. The antioxidant activity of treated grape extracts as compared with untreated extracts was also assayed. Exogenous (-)-methyl jasmonate in combination with ethanol induced a significant increase in the levels of resveratrol (from 27 to 39 μg g(-1)), quercetin-3-O-glucoside (from 59 to 136 μg g(-1)), quercetin-3-O-galactoside (from 398 to 807 μg g(-1)) and quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (from 23 to 43 μg g(-1)).

In this paper, an intelligent scheme for detecting incipient defects in spur gears is presented. In fact, the study has been undertaken to determine these defects in a single propeller system of a small-sized unmanned helicopter. It is important to remark that although the study focused on this particular system, the obtained results could be extended to other systems known as AUVs (Autonomous Unmanned Vehicles), where the usage of polymer gears in the vehicle transmission is frequent.

Oxidative stress is a biochemical state in which reactive oxygen species are generated and it has been associated with pathological states including epilepsy. Therein, neuroprostanes (NeuroPs) and dihomo-isoprostanes (Dihomo-IsoPs)-a series of compounds formed nonenzymatically through free radical-induced DHA, n-6 DPA, and AdA peroxidation-are implicated in the pathophysiological status of various human neurological diseases. A new, robust, and selective analytical method for the determination of 10 NeuroPs/Dihomo-IsoPs in human urine, using solid-phase extraction and UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS in the multiple reaction monitoring mode (using a negative electrospray ionization interface), was developed.

An HPLC method for the determination of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, flavanone 3β-hydroxylase and flavonol synthase enzyme activity is proposed. This method is based on the determination of the compounds produced and consumed on the enzymatic reaction in just one chromatographic analysis. Optimisation of the method considered kinetic studies to establish the incubation time to perform the assay.

A new method based on off-line coupling of LC with GC in replacement of conventional sample preparation techniques is proposed to analyze acrylamide in coffee brews. The method involves the preseparation of the sample by LC, the collection of the selected fraction, its concentration under nitrogen, and subsequent analysis by GC coupled with MS. The composition of the LC mobile phase and the flow rate were studied to select those conditions that allowed separation of acrylamide without coeluting compounds.
