Unlabelled: The oral lichenoid disease (OLD) includes different chronic inflammatory processes such as oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral lichenoid lesions (OLL), both entities with controversial diagnosis and malignant potential. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EFGR) is an important oral carcinogenesis biomarker and overexpressed in several oral potentially malignant disorders.

Objectives: To analyze the EGFR expression in the OLD to find differences between OLP and OLL, and to correlate it with the main clinical and pathological features.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral and laryngeal cancers are prevalent in the Basque Country, mainly due to tobacco and alcohol use, though not everyone exposed to these risks develops cancer.
  • Research aimed to explore the genetic susceptibility of individuals in this region, focusing on the alcohol dehydrogenase-1B polymorphism (Arg48His; rs1229984).
  • The study found that individuals with certain genotypes (Arg/His and His/His) had a significantly lower risk of developing oral and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, suggesting that the histidine allele may offer protective effects against these cancers.
