Introduction: It is known that non-adherence to psychiatric medications has harmful consequences for both patients and society.

Objective: To collect information on the incidence of non-adherence, and the factors and causes affecting adherence to psychopharmacological treatment in patients with severe and persistent mental disorders.

Methods: A systematic review of scientific articles on adult patients (>17 years) published in the last five years (2015-2020) on specialised databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Scielo and BioMed.
