Purpose: To examine the response to anti-osteoporotic treatment, considered as incident fragility fractures after a minimum follow-up of 1 year, according to sex, age, and number of comorbidities of the patients.
Methods: For this retrospective observational study, data from baseline and follow-up visits on the number of comorbidities, prescribed anti-osteoporotic treatment and vertebral, humerus or hip fractures in 993 patients from the OSTEOMED registry were analyzed using logistic regression and an artificial network model.
Results: Logistic regression showed that the probability of reducing fractures for each anti-osteoporotic treatment considered was independent of sex, age, and the number of comorbidities, increasing significantly only in males taking vitamin D (OR = 7.
Links between water and carbon (C) cycles in drylands are strongly regulated by biocrusts. These widespread communities in the intershrub spaces of drylands are able to use non-rainfall water inputs (NRWI) (fog, dewfall and water vapour) to become active and fix carbon dioxide (CO), converting biocrusts into the main soil C contributors during periods in which vegetation remains inactive. In this study, we first evaluated the influence of biocrust type on NRWI uptake using automated microlysimeters, and second, we performed an outdoor experiment to examine how NRWI affected C exchange (photosynthesis and respiration) in biocrusts.

The objective of our study was to reach a consensus on the management of PMO, considering prevention, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up, according to expert opinion in Spain.
Methods: A two-round Delphi technique was conducted, including 38 experts.
Background And Aims: An association between cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis is described. A number of drugs often used by patients with coronary heart disease, such as thiazides, statins and beta-blockers, have shown controversial effects on bone. 1) To study the possible association between coronary heart disease (CHD) and bone mass density (BMD), quantitative ultrasound measurements (QUS) and the prevalence of fragility and vertebral fractures.

Methods: The authors measured the distribution, TCR-Vbeta repertoire, immunophenotype, and functional characteristics of different subsets of BM T lymphocytes from 61 nontreated patients with MG (30 patients with MG of undetermined significance [MGUS], 27 patients with multiple myeloma [MM], and 4 patients with plasma cell leukemia [PCL]).
Results: The authors found a significantly increased rate of BM infiltration by T cells in all patient groups, at the expense of CD4+CD8- and CD4-CD8- T lymphocytes and both CD4+CD28- and CD8+CD28- cytotoxic/effector T cell subsets, and associated with TCR-Vbeta expansions in both CD4+ and CD8+ BM T cells in the majority of patients with MGUS, MM, and PCL.

Background: Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a clonal plasma cell (PC) disorder usually characterized by a benign clinical course. However, in approximately 25% of patients, the disorder has been found to evolve into a multiple myeloma (MM). The mechanism leading to the evolution of MGUS remains unknown.

Forty-one patients showed a p16 methylated gene (42%). The percentage of S-phase plasma cells (PC) in these patients was almost three times higher than in those with an unmethylated p16 gene (4.

Using this approach, we compared the efficacy of high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) with that of conventional chemotherapy. We found that ASCT provided a significantly greater reduction in the level of residual tumor PCs and with better recovery of normal PCs.
