Clinical Outcomes after Surgical Resection Combined with Brachytherapy for Uveal Melanomas.

Currently, brachytherapy is the most commonly used therapeutic approach for uveal melanomas. Surgical resection by means of endoresection or exoresection is an alternative approach. The present report recounts our experience over 15 years in the treatment of uveal melanoma using a combined approach of resection surgery with brachytherapy.

In the course of a worldwide revision of the genus , we identified problems in the circumscription of some species of the genus as well as among some allied genera grouped in the tribe Syntricheae. This is the case for the two propagulose and , closely related to We analyzed phylogenetic relationships between these species, based on nuclear (ITS) and two plastid (L-F and G) markers and morphological features. Species delimitation using molecular data was consistent with our preliminary morphological inference.

Lymphopenia in hospitalized patients and its relationship with severity of illness and mortality.

Background: Lymphopenia is associated with various pathologies such as sepsis, burns, trauma, general anesthesia and major surgeries. All these pathologies are clinically expressed by the so-called Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome which does not include lymphopenia into defining criteria. The main objective of this work was to analyze the diagnosis of patients admitted to a hospital related to lymphopenia during hospital stay.

Patients who are on a waiting list for cardiac transplantation often have a clinical profile that satisfies current recommendations for the implantation of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator for the primary prevention of sudden death. The prospect that transplantation may take place within the short-to-medium term puts the effectiveness of this therapy in doubt. We investigated the incidence of therapy delivered by implantable cardioverter-defibrillators implanted for primary prevention in patients awaiting cardiac transplantation.

Reduced susceptibility to bovine spongiform encephalopathy prions in transgenic mice expressing a bovine PrP with five octapeptide repeats.

In this work, transgenic (Tg) mice were generated expressing a bovine prion protein containing five octarepeats (BoPrP(5OR)-Tg). After intracerebral inoculation of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) inoculum, these mice suffered a BSE-like neuropathology but survived longer compared with homologous Tg mice expressing similar levels of a six octarepeat BoPrP protein (BoPrP(6OR)-Tg). De novo-generated five octarepeat (5OR) PrP(Sc) showed no biochemical differences from 6OR-PrP(Sc), and the proteinase K-resistant core (PrP(res)) was biochemically indistinguishable from the 6OR counterpart.

Comparison of three monoclonal antibodies for use in immunohistochemical detection of bovine spongiform encephalopathy protease-resistant prion protein.
