Introduction: Risk factors for developing pancreatitis due to thiopurines in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are not clearly identified. Our aim was to evaluate the predictive pharmacogenetic risk of pancreatitis in IBD patients treated with thiopurines.

Methods: We conducted an observational pharmacogenetic study of acute pancreatitis events in a cohort study of IBD patients treated with thiopurines from the prospectively maintained ENEIDA registry biobank of GETECCU.

Article Synopsis
  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) can develop in patients with long-standing ulcerative colitis (UC), and microRNAs may serve as important biomarkers for tracking this progression.
  • The study examined 96 microRNAs in tissue samples from UC patients and controls, identifying 64 that were deregulated, particularly focusing on three miRNAs—miR-31, -106a, and -135b—that showed significant changes between different stages of the disease.
  • Findings suggest that UC-associated CRCs have unique microRNA expression patterns compared to sporadic CRCs, with some microRNAs potentially indicating early cancer development.

Background & Aims: There is conflicting evidence regarding the prevalence of and risk factors for metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aimed to determine MAFLD prevalence and risk factors in IBD patients.

Methods: Cross-sectional, case-control study included all consecutive IBD patients treated at 2 different university hospitals.

Background And Aims: Crohn's disease [CD] can develop penetrating complications at any time during the disease course. Enterocutaneous fistulae [ECF] are disease-related complications with an important impact on quality of life. Our aim was to describe the outcomes of this complication, including its medical and/or surgical management and their temporal trends.

Background Aims: Current therapeutic goals in ulcerative colitis (UC) include clinical and endoscopic remission, named mucosal healing (MH). Despite MH, a proportion of patients suffer a clinical relapse, which has been related to histological inflammation. We aimed to identify which histopathological features or histopathological index cut-off was associated with endoscopic relapse (ER) in UC patients with MH.

Introduction: COVID-19 has altered the usual practice of medicine and the state of emergency declared in Spain on March 14th has considerably changed the activity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) units. The aim of this study was to evaluate the consequences of COVID-19 on the IBD Unit's activity and provide information on restructuring with available resources.

Methods: an observational study was performed in a referral hospital in Madrid (Spain).

Purpose: biosimilar infliximab (CTP-13) has been recently approved for the treatment of several immune-mediated inflammatory disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Comparative studies between this biosimilar and original infliximab in the real clinical practice are scarce. The objective of this study was to compare short and long-term safety and efficacy of original (O) and biosimilar infliximab (B-IFX) in biologic-naïve, IBD patients in the real life clinical practice.

Background: The effectiveness of the switch to another anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) agent is not known. The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness and safety of treatment with a second and third anti-TNF drug after intolerance to or failure of a previous anti-TNF agent in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients.

Methods: We included patients diagnosed with IBD from the ENEIDA registry who received another anti-TNF after intolerance to or failure of a prior anti-TNF agent.

Background: Histological remission represents a target distinct from endoscopic healing in ulcerative colitis (UC) and seems a better predictor of clinical outcomes.

Aims: The aim of this study was to assess the ability of adalimumab to achieve histological remission in UC patients.

Methods: Single-center, retrospective, open-label study of patients treated with adalimumab.

Objective: Outside clinical trials, the effectiveness of chromoendoscopy (CE) for long-standing IBD surveillance is controversial. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of CE for neoplasia detection and characterisation, in real-life.

Design: From June 2012 to 2014, patients with IBD were prospectively included in a multicentre cohort study.

Introduction: Multidisciplinary units are needed because of the growing complexity and volume of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Objectives: To evaluate the healthcare, economic and research impact of incorporating a nurse into the IBD unit of the Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda University Hospital.

Methods: We prospectively recorded the activity carried out by the nurse of the IBD unit from March 2010 to December 2014.

Introduction: Early stages of Crohn's disease [CD] are predominantly inflammatory and early treatment could be useful to change the natural history of CD. We aimed to evaluate the impact of early treatment in our cohort of CD patients.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed clinical records of all CD patients at our centre who have received immunomodulators.

Background And Aims: nursing management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is highly relevant for patient care and outcomes. However, there is evidence of substantial variability in clinical practices. The objectives of this study were to develop standards of healthcare quality for nursing management of IBD and elaborate the evaluation tool "Nursing Care Quality in IBD Assessment" (NCQ-IBD) based on these standards.

Objective: to describe the experience at two tertiary centres during the first year of use of magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) for the management of Crohn's disease (CD): indications and influence of the technique in clinical decision making.

Materials And Methods: retrospective descriptive study in which patients who underwent MRE were included consecutively. Epidemiological and clinical data were collected from the patients, as well as the indication for the study and how it influenced clinical decision making in the 10 days following the radiological study.

Background: Nurses play an important role in the multidisciplinary management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but little is known about this role and the associated resources.

Objective: To improve knowledge of resource availability for health care activities and the different organizational models in managing IBD in Spain.

Methods: Cross-sectional study with data obtained by questionnaire directed at Spanish Gastroenterology Services (GS).

Immunosuppressive or biological treatment in patients with inflammatory bowel disease can modify the natural history of their disease, although these treatments are not universally effective and can have severe adverse effects. Attempts have been made to identify predictive factors of response to the various therapeutic options in order to aid the choice of the most appropriate therapeutic alternative in each patient. The possibility of modifying any one of these predictive factors would be of great interest since it would provide the opportunity to alter the course of the disease.

The full length cDNA sequence of the myostatin gene was cloned from a teleostean fish, the Chilean flounder (Paralichthys adspersus) through RT-PCR amplification coupled with the RACE approach to complete the 5'- and 3'-region. The deduced amino acid sequence encodes a protein of 377 amino acid residues, including the structural domains responsible for its biological activity. Amino acid sequence comparison revealed high sequence conservation, and confirmed that the isolated sequence corresponds to the MSTN1 gene.

Previously, we reported the presence in mouse cells of a mitochondrial RNA which contains an inverted repeat (IR) of 121 nucleotides (nt) covalently linked to the 5' end of the mitochondrial 16S RNA (16S mtrRNA). Here, we report the structure of an equivalent transcript of 2374 nt which is over-expressed in human proliferating cells but not in resting cells. The transcript contains a hairpin structure comprising an IR of 815 nt linked to the 5' end of the 16S mtrRNA and forming a long double-stranded structure or stem and a loop of 40 nt.
