This review was undertaken to assess the available evidence on the benefits and risks of laparoscopy compared with laparotomy for the management of International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage I ovarian cancer.

Background: We carried out a case-control study in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to evaluate the association between seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously described to be linked to diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Additionally, we evaluated gene and protein expression related to the polymorphism associated with DKD.

Methods: The association study included 1098 T2DM patients (718 with DKD and 380 without DKD).

Background/objectives: Epigenetic deregulation may be involved in tumor cell biology, including differentiation, tumor progression, and cell death, and histone acetylation is a major regulatory mechanism of gene transcription. Patterns of global histone modifications have been recently suggested as outcome predictors in cancer patients, but few studies have been conducted on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs). This study was designed to investigate the predictive value of histone acetylation modifications on PDAC.

Objectives: Extracellular purines are a component of the systemic inflammatory response, and their levels are modulated by ectonucleotidases. In addition, nucleotide hydrolysis releases phosphate. We studied serum phosphate levels as a predictor of severity in acute pancreatitis (AP) and their correlation with extracellular purinergic metabolism.

Long-Term Comparison of Aesthetical Outcomes After Oncoplastic Surgery and Lumpectomy in Breast Cancer Patients.

Comparison between preoperative and intraoperative injection of (99m)Tc Dextran-500 for sentinel lymph node localization in breast cancer.

A retrospective study was conducted from a review of the medical records of patients with early-stage, invasive breast cancer who underwent surgical treatment and sentinel node biopsy with a radiotracer from January 2008 to August 2012 at a single institution (221 patients included). The patients were grouped according to the time of (99m)Tc Dextran-500 injection, which was preoperatively (with lymphoscintigraphy) (81 patients) or intraoperatively (140 patients). The purpose of the report is to compare the results of sentinel node biopsy of early-stage breast cancer patients who were subjected to intraoperative (99m)Tc Dextran-500 injections with the patients who received preoperative injections.

Objective: To explore the relationship between prematurity, gender and chorioamnionitis as determinants of early life lung function in premature infants.

Methods: Placenta and membranes were collected from preterm deliveries (<37 weeks gestational age) and evaluated for histological chorioamnionitis (HCA). Patients were followed and lung function was performed in the first year of life by Raised Volume-Rapid Thoracic Compression Technique.

Gene expression of leptin and long leptin receptor isoform in endometriosis: a case-control study.

In this study, leptin/BMI ratio in serum and peritoneal fluid and gene expression of leptin and long form leptin receptor (OB-RL) were assessed in eutopic and ectopic endometria of women with endometriosis and controls. Increased serum leptin/BMI ratio was found in endometriosis patients. Leptin and OB-RL gene expression was significantly higher in ectopic versus eutopic endometrium of patients and controls.

Periodontal disease treatment and risk of preterm birth: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The events leading to preterm birth are still not completely understood. A quantitative systematic review was performed to estimate the effects of periodontal care during pregnancy on preventing preterm birth and low birth weight. The meta-analysis included randomized trials with pregnant women with a diagnosis of periodontal disease before 20 weeks of gestation.

Effectiveness of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy in preventing ovarian cancer in a high-risk French Canadian population.

Background: Women with germ line BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations have a marked increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer compared with the general population, whereas risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) significantly lowers the incidence of these cancers. The objective of this study was to review the clinical and pathological characteristics of a French Canadian population undergoing RRSO. Surgical morbidity was also evaluated.

Experimental model of tracheal stenosis with submucosal resection of cartilaginous rings combined with sodium hydroxide instillations.

Objective: To experimentally develop tracheal stenosis and malacia to test new models of tracheal stents.

Methods: We resected three cartilaginous rings from the cervical trachea of dogs in group A (n = 5) and six rings in group B (n = 4) to produce malacia. The mucosa of the region with malacia then received applications of a solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at 23%, and the animals were accompanied with bronchoscopic examinations to observe the development of luminal narrowing of the airway.

Prevalence of human papillomavirus in breast cancer: a systematic review.

Objective: We performed a systematic review and meta-analyses to estimate the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in breast carcinoma and to explore the reasons for the ongoing controversies about this issue.

Materials And Methods: A comprehensive search of the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, CANCERLIT, LILACS, and EMBASE databases was performed for papers published from January 1990 to January 2011. The medical subject heading terms were searched for the following: breast neoplasm, breast lesions, breast cancer, and HPV or human papillomavirus.

Helicobacter pylori eradication in functional dyspepsia: HEROES trial.

Background: Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with functional dyspepsia continues to be a matter of debate. We studied eradication effects on symptoms and quality of life of primary care patients.

Methods: Helicobacter pylori -positive adult patients with functional dyspepsia meeting the Rome III International Consensus criteria were randomly assigned to receive omeprazole, amoxicillin trihydrate, and clarithromycin, or omeprazole plus placebo for 10 days.
