Background: In recent decades, the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obesity has been increasing while Helicobacter pylori infection has been decreasing.
Objective: To evaluate if H. pylori treatment, excess body weight and other anthropometric measurements are associated with incident erosive esophagitis, as a secondary objective of a trial which tested the efficacy of treatment of H.

Background: This is the second updated version of the original Cochrane review published in the Cochrane Library 2009, Issue 3. Most women with early cervical cancer (stages I to IIA) are cured with surgery or radiotherapy, or both. We performed this review originally because it was unclear whether cisplatin-based chemotherapy after surgery, radiotherapy or both, in women with early stage disease with risk factors for recurrence, was associated with additional survival benefits or risks.

Background: This is an updated version of the original review that was first published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2008, Issue 4. Laparoscopy has become an increasingly common approach to surgical staging of apparent early-stage ovarian tumours. This review was undertaken to assess the available evidence on the benefits and risks of laparoscopy compared with laparotomy for the management of International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage I ovarian cancer.

Additionally, we evaluated gene and protein expression related to the polymorphism associated with DKD.
Methods: The association study included 1098 T2DM patients (718 with DKD and 380 without DKD).
Glioblastoma multiforme is a devastating cerebral tumor with an exceedingly poor prognosis. Methotrexate (MTX) is a folic acid analogue that inhibits DNA synthesis by binding to dihydrofolate reductase. Biodegradable nanoparticles are emerging as a promising system for drug delivery to specific tissues.

Background: Histopathological grading diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast may be very difficult even for experts, and it is important for therapeutic decisions. The challenge may be due to the inaccurate and/or subjective application of the diagnosis criteria. The aim of this study was to investigate the intra-observer agreement between a traditional method and a developed web-based questionnaire for scoring breast DCIS.

Background/objectives: Epigenetic deregulation may be involved in tumor cell biology, including differentiation, tumor progression, and cell death, and histone acetylation is a major regulatory mechanism of gene transcription. Patterns of global histone modifications have been recently suggested as outcome predictors in cancer patients, but few studies have been conducted on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs). This study was designed to investigate the predictive value of histone acetylation modifications on PDAC.

In addition, nucleotide hydrolysis releases phosphate. We studied serum phosphate levels as a predictor of severity in acute pancreatitis (AP) and their correlation with extracellular purinergic metabolism.

Although oncoplastic surgery (OP) could be a useful alternative to avoid them, lack of strong data is causing some debate. The purpose of this study was to compare aesthetic outcomes in patients undergoing OP versus lumpectomy using three different assessment methods.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA retrospective study was conducted from a review of the medical records of patients with early-stage, invasive breast cancer who underwent surgical treatment and sentinel node biopsy with a radiotracer from January 2008 to August 2012 at a single institution (221 patients included). The patients were grouped according to the time of (99m)Tc Dextran-500 injection, which was preoperatively (with lymphoscintigraphy) (81 patients) or intraoperatively (140 patients). The purpose of the report is to compare the results of sentinel node biopsy of early-stage breast cancer patients who were subjected to intraoperative (99m)Tc Dextran-500 injections with the patients who received preoperative injections.

Purpose: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease. Immunohistochemistry has given rise to triple-negative carcinoma (TNC). Concomitantly, biological origins of neoplasia and its heterogeneity has been strongly debated in cancer stem cells (CSC) theme.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAccording to the World Health Organization, bladder cancer is the seventh most common cancer among men in the world. The current treatments for this malignancy are not efficient to prevent the recurrence and progression of tumors. Then, researches continue looking for better therapeutic targets which can end up in new and more efficient treatments.

Methods: Placenta and membranes were collected from preterm deliveries (<37 weeks gestational age) and evaluated for histological chorioamnionitis (HCA). Patients were followed and lung function was performed in the first year of life by Raised Volume-Rapid Thoracic Compression Technique.
In this study, leptin/BMI ratio in serum and peritoneal fluid and gene expression of leptin and long form leptin receptor (OB-RL) were assessed in eutopic and ectopic endometria of women with endometriosis and controls. Increased serum leptin/BMI ratio was found in endometriosis patients. Leptin and OB-RL gene expression was significantly higher in ectopic versus eutopic endometrium of patients and controls.

In this context, biodegradable nanoparticles are emerging as efficient drug delivery systems for the treatment of difficult-to-treat diseases such as brain tumors.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIncreasing evidence points out that genetic alteration does not guarantee the development of a tumor and indicates that complex interactions of tumor cells with the microenvironment are fundamental to tumorigenesis. Among the pathological alterations that give tumor cells invasive potential, disruption of inflammatory response and the purinergic signaling are emerging as an important component of cancer progression. Nucleotide/nucleoside receptor-mediated cell communication is orchestrated by ectonucleotidases, which efficiently hydrolyze ATP, ADP, and AMP to adenosine.

A quantitative systematic review was performed to estimate the effects of periodontal care during pregnancy on preventing preterm birth and low birth weight. The meta-analysis included randomized trials with pregnant women with a diagnosis of periodontal disease before 20 weeks of gestation.

Exclusion of the pelvic examination could result in a higher acceptance of the cervical screening among these communities and an increase in screening coverage.

The objective of this study was to review the clinical and pathological characteristics of a French Canadian population undergoing RRSO. Surgical morbidity was also evaluated.

Methods: We resected three cartilaginous rings from the cervical trachea of dogs in group A (n = 5) and six rings in group B (n = 4) to produce malacia. The mucosa of the region with malacia then received applications of a solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at 23%, and the animals were accompanied with bronchoscopic examinations to observe the development of luminal narrowing of the airway.
Objective: We performed a systematic review and meta-analyses to estimate the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in breast carcinoma and to explore the reasons for the ongoing controversies about this issue.
Materials And Methods: A comprehensive search of the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, CANCERLIT, LILACS, and EMBASE databases was performed for papers published from January 1990 to January 2011. The medical subject heading terms were searched for the following: breast neoplasm, breast lesions, breast cancer, and HPV or human papillomavirus.
Background: Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with functional dyspepsia continues to be a matter of debate. We studied eradication effects on symptoms and quality of life of primary care patients.
Methods: Helicobacter pylori -positive adult patients with functional dyspepsia meeting the Rome III International Consensus criteria were randomly assigned to receive omeprazole, amoxicillin trihydrate, and clarithromycin, or omeprazole plus placebo for 10 days.
