On September 29, 2023, the Republic of Ecuador convened a meeting to address surgical system strengthening and urge political leaders to invest in surgical infrastructure. The meeting included experts in health diplomacy, innovative financing, implementation strategy and national surgical plans. The event occurred in parallel with the Sixtieth Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization, Seventy-fifth session of the World Health Organization Regional Committee for the Americas.

Solitary Giant Primary Gastric Plasmacytoma Mimicking Gastric Adenocarcinoma In Situ.

A solitary extraosseous plasmacytoma is a rare type of plasma cell neoplasm. Its occurrence in the stomach is particularly unusual and can easily be mistaken for more common types of tumors. We describe a case involving a solitary extraosseous plasmacytoma in a patient who experienced weight loss as the sole symptom.

Aminopeptidasic Enzymes as Early Biomarkers of Cardiac Surgery-Associated Acute Kidney Injury and Long-Term Events.

Background: Diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) relies on serum creatinine (SCr) changes. This study investigated if urinary aminopeptidases are early and predictive biomarkers of cardiac surgery-associated AKI (CSA-AKI).

Methods: Glutamyl aminopeptidase (GluAp), alanyl aminopeptidase (AlaAp), dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4), proteinuria, albuminuria, N-acetyl-β--glucosaminidase (NAG), and neutrophile gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) were measured in urine samples from 44 patients at arrival in the intensive care unit (ICU) after cardiac surgery.

Alternative CNDOL Fockians for fast and accurate description of molecular exciton properties.

CNDOL is an a priori, approximate Fockian for molecular wave functions. In this study, we employ several modes of singly excited configuration interaction (CIS) to model molecular excitation properties by using four combinations of the one electron operator terms. Those options are compared to the experimental and theoretical data for a carefully selected set of molecules.

Inhalation of acidic nanoparticles prevents doxorubicin cardiotoxicity through improvement of lysosomal function.

Doxorubicin (Dox) is an effective anticancer molecule, but its clinical efficacy is limited by strong cardiotoxic side effects. Lysosomal dysfunction has recently been proposed as a new mechanism of Dox-induced cardiomyopathy. However, to date, there is a paucity of therapeutic approaches capable of restoring lysosomal acidification and function in the heart.

Inconsistency Between Pictures on Baby Diaper Packaging in Europe and Safe Infant Sleep Recommendations.

Objective: To describe the level of inconsistency between pictures on baby diaper packaging and safe infant sleep recommendations (SISRs) in Europe.

Study Design: We attempted to identify all packaging of baby diapers sold in 11 European countries for infants weighing less than 5 kg through internet searches from July 2022 through February 2023. For each type of package, we extracted whether there was a picture depicting a baby, whether the baby was sleeping, and whether the picture of the sleeping baby was inconsistent with ≥1 of 3 SISRs: (i) nonsupine sleeping position, (ii) soft objects or loose bedding, or (iii) sharing a sleep surface with another person.

Evaluation of a culturally adapted reminiscence therapy intervention: Improving mood, family and community connectedness in Spanish- and Vietnamese-speaking older adults.

Reminiscence therapy (RT) is an evidence-based treatment for alleviating depression and improving life satisfaction among elders, yet less is known about its efficacy in diverse ethnic groups. We report on the evaluation of a cultural adaptation of the RT intervention that combines reminiscence with three innovative elements: including family members in RT; conducting community events for participants to present their artwork and life-story books created during the intervention; and using ethnically matched bilingual community workers. The 12-week intervention with pre- and post-test assessments was completed by 73 Hispanic and 92 Vietnamese elders (mean age  =  75 years; 62% female; mostly foreign-born, with limited English proficiency).

Soil contamination caused by pesticides poses a significant environmental challenge, and addressing it requires effective solutions. Bioremediation, combining the utilization of slurry-bioreactors and microbial consortia, emerges as an appropiated strategy to tackle this issue. Therefore, this research evaluated the chlordane (CLD) removal efficiency by a Streptomyces consortium through bioaugmentation of polluted soils, and slurry-bioreactors.

Real-World Experience with Vismodegib on Advanced and Multiple BCCs: Data from the RELIVIS Study.

Background: Vismodegib is approved for advanced cases of basal cell carcinomas not amenable to surgery or radiotherapy. Large studies on the use of vismodegib in clinical practice are scarce.

Objectives: The main objective of the study was to analyse the evolution and therapeutic management of relapses and lack of response in patients who had received vismodegib for locally advanced and/or multiple basal cell carcinomas in a real-life multicentre setting.

Applied of actinobacteria consortia-based bioremediation to restore co-contaminated systems.

Global industrialization and natural resources extraction have left cocktails of environmental pollutants. Thus, this work focuses on developing a defined actinobacteria consortium able to restore systems co-contaminated with pollutants occurring in Argentinian environments. In this context, five actinobacteria were tested in solid medium to evaluate antagonistic interactions and tolerance against lindane (LIN), Reactive Black B-V (RBV), phenanthrene (Ph) and Cr(VI).

Introduction: Intraoperative arterial hypotension is associated with poor postoperative outcomes. The Hypotension Prediction Index (HPI) developed using machine learning techniques, allows the prediction of arterial hypotension analysing the arterial pressure waveform. The use of this index may reduce the duration and severity of intraoperative hypotension in adults undergoing non-cardiac surgery.

Risk of Severe Coronavirus Disease 2019 Infection in Kidney Transplant Recipients.

Background: Despite all efforts, the incidence of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection has been high in renal transplant recipients, as in other groups (eg, older adults, patients with comorbidities or immunosuppression). The detection of any possible predictor of gravity could improve the early approach in these patients.

Patients And Methods: We registered data from renal transplant recipients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) infection in our area for a year (March 2020 to March 2021).

Effectiveness of a combined transcranial direct current stimulation and virtual reality-based intervention on upper limb function in chronic individuals post-stroke with persistent severe hemiparesis: a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Functional impairments derived from the non-use of severely affected upper limb after stroke have been proposed to be mitigated by action observation and imagination-based techniques, whose effectiveness is enhanced when combined with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Preliminary studies in mildly impaired individuals in the acute phase post-stroke show intensified effects when action is facilitated by tDCS and mediated by virtual reality (VR) but the effectiveness in cases of severe impairment and chronic stroke is unknown. This study investigated the effectiveness of a combined tDCS and VR-based intervention in the sensorimotor function of chronic individuals post-stroke with persistent severe hemiparesis compared to conventional physical therapy.

Mounting evidence suggests a major role of infectious agents in the pathogenesis of sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Among them, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection has emerged as a major factor in the etiology of AD. HSV-1 is able to induce some of the main alterations of the disease such as hyperphosphorylation of tau protein and accumulation of amyloid-β peptide.

Short-term effects of air pollution on the health of residents in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, Mexico were assessed from 2012-2015 using a time-series approach. Guadalupe had the highest mean concentrations for SO, CO and O; whereas Santa Catarina showed the highest NO concentrations. Escobedo and Garcia registered the highest levels for PM.

Parenting Warmth and Strictness across Three Generations: Parenting Styles and Psychosocial Adjustment.

Recent emergent research is seriously questioning whether parental strictness contributes to children's psychosocial adjustment in all cultural contexts. We examined cross-generational differences in parental practices characterized by warmth and practices characterized by strictness, as well as the relationship between parenting styles (authoritative, indulgent, authoritarian, and neglectful) and psychosocial adjustment in adulthood. Parenting practices characterized by warmth (affection, reasoning, indifference, and detachment) and strictness (revoking privileges, verbal scolding, and physical punishment) were examined.

Bioremediation of lindane-contaminated soils by combining of bioaugmentation and biostimulation: Effective scaling-up from microcosms to mesocosms.

The scaling-up of lindane-contaminated soils bioremediation from microcosms to mesocosms bioaugmentated with an actinobacteria quadruple culture and biostimulated with sugarcane filter cake (SCFC) was surveyed. Mesocosms of silty loam soil, clayey soil, and sandy soil were polluted with the pesticide, bioaugmented with the mixed culture, biostimulated with adequate amounts of 0.5 mm SCFC particles, and assessed during 63 days maintaining environmental parameters with minimal intervention.

Effect of a single-component ceramic conditioner on shear bond strength of precoated brackets to different CAD/CAM materials.

Objectives: To compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of the CAD/CAM material-bracket interface using three surface treatments: following manufacturers' instructions (MI), Monobond Etch & Prime (MEP) and 9.6% hydrofluoric acid plus silane (9.6% HF), after 24 h of water storage (24 h) and 10,000 cycles of thermocycling (TC).

Background: The worldwide emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria has become a health crisis, as fewer or sometimes no antimicrobial agents are effective against these bacteria. The Rio Grande River is the natural boundary between the United States (US) and Mexico. It spans a border region between Texas, New Mexico and Mexico.

Coupling of bioaugmentation and biostimulation to improve lindane removal from different soil types.

Lindane is an organochlorine pesticide that, due to its persistence in the environment, is still detected in different matrices. Bioremediation using actinobacteria consortia proved to be promising for the restoration of contaminated soils. Another alternative to remove xenobiotics is to use agricultural residues, which stimulates microbial activity, increasing its capacity to degrade organic pollutants.
