In a previous work, we proposed a methodology for pair-wise discrimination of gasoline samples by creating virtual samples based on physicochemical assays or distillation curves. Satisfactory results were achieved, although specialist and specific apparatus (not commonly available at police laboratories) were required. The present study goes a step further and for the first time investigates the possibility of infrared (IR) spectroscopy to enable a virtual samples-based methodology for comparison of gasoline samples in pairs.

This work describes the use of virtual standards as calibration samples in an innovative multivariate calibration approach for the on-line monitoring of alkyl-esters content during biodiesel production process using a miniature near infrared (NIR) spectrometer. For comparison purposes, a partial least squares (PLS) model was built using synthetic blends prepared in laboratory with different concentrations of oil, glycerol, biodiesel, and ethanol and resulted in a satisfactory predictive ability (root mean square error of prediction, RMSEP, of 1.51% w/w).

A non-destructive methodology based on Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is proposed in this research to estimate the age of documents of different ages. Due the variability in the samples caused by their different chemical compositions, chemometric approaches were proposed to build one unique regression model able to determine the age of the paper regardless of its composition. PLS models were built employing Generalized Least Squares Weighting (GLSW) and Orthogonal Least Squares (OLS) filters to reduce the variability of samples from the same year.

Projection pursuit (PP) is an effective exploratory data analysis tool because it optimizes the projection of high dimensional data using distributional characteristics rather than variance or distance metrics. The recent development of fast and simple PP algorithms based on minimization of kurtosis for clustering data has made this powerful tool more accessible, but under conditions where the sample-to-variable ratio is small, PP fails due to opportunistic overfitting of random correlations to limiting distributional targets. Therefore, some kind of variable compression or data regularization is required in these cases.

This paper proposes a new method for calibration transfer, which was specifically designed to work with isolated variables, rather than the full spectrum or spectral windows. For this purpose, a univariate procedure is initially employed to correct the spectral measurements of the secondary instrument, given a set of transfer samples. A method using the ring-oven technique for pre-concentration in filter paper discs and near infrared hyperspectral imaging is proposed to identify four detergent and dispersant additives, and to determine their concentration in gasoline. Different approaches were used to select the best image data processing in order to gather the relevant spectral information. This was attained by selecting the pixels of the region of interest (ROI), using a pre-calculated threshold value of the PCA scores arranged as histograms, to select the spectra set; summing up the selected spectra to achieve representativeness; and compensating for the superimposed filter paper spectral information, also supported by scores histograms for each individual sample.
