The main objective of this study is to determine whether the employment of fixed-dose combination of pertuzumab and trastuzumab for subcutaneous injection (PH FDC SC; and Phesgo as brand name) to treat metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer patients would minimize costs compared to the traditional treatment of separate intravenous doses of pertuzumab and trastuzumab in Peru. To achieve this, we used EsSalud (the social security health insurance) data and assessed it through a mixed strategy, which consisted of a quantitative and a qualitative approach. The first one aimed to calculate the direct (non-drug consumables, drugs, and healthcare professionals) and indirect costs of both treatments to develop a comparison, whilst the second aimed to validate information and internalize the procedure in an EsSalud context.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to identify the clinical features of patients with uveitic glaucoma (UG) and ocular hypertension secondary to uveitis (OHT-SU) by analyzing medical records from 2013 to 2021.
  • - Among 660 patients with uveitis, 28.9% had OHT-SU and 16.4% developed UG, with females being more affected than males, especially in group-specific age ranges.
  • - The findings suggest UG and OHT-SU are prevalent in the Colombian population, with a recommendation for earlier treatment to improve visual outcomes, as 81.1% of patients received topical hypotensive therapy and some required surgical intervention.

A non-comparative retrospective case-series study was performed on 6 patients (12 eyes) with a confirmed diagnosis of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP), treated with MicroPulse Transscleral Laser Therapy (MP-TLT), between January 2018 and 2020, with a minimum follow-up of 2 years, in a private ophthalmology practice with offices in Argentina and Colombia. Mean age was 75±6.3 years (66-83 yrs).

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the developed and developing world. Not only is the clinical impact of this disease considerable, but associated economic and humanistic burdens - affecting patients, caregivers, and society - are substantial. Since glaucoma is an age-related disorder and populations in many developing countries are aging at a faster pace than in the developed world, increasing attention is being focused on ways to ameliorate the burdens of illness.

The cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) response plays an important role in the control of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) replication and the establishment of a Th1-CD4+ T cell response against the virus. Despite lacking Major Histocompatibility Complex I (MHC I)-restricted epitopes, the attachment G glycoprotein of RSV enhances CTL activity toward other RSV antigens, and this effect depends on its conserved central region. Here, we report that RSV-G can also improve CTL activity toward antigens from unrelated pathogens such as influenza, and that a mutant form of RSV-G lacking four conserved cysteine residues at positions 173, 176, 182, and 186 fails to enhance CTL responses.

Background: Breastfeeding is a well-known protective factor against severe respiratory tract infections. Recently, a gender specific role for human milk has been described in very low birth weight infants and neonates: breast milk protected girls but not boys.

Objective: To determine whether the protective effect of breastfeeding on the severity of acute respiratory infections in full term infants is different for girls and boys.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of hospitalization in infants. A formalin-inactivated RSV vaccine was used to immunize children and elicited nonprotective, pathogenic antibody. Immunized infants experienced increased morbidity after subsequent RSV exposure.

Background/aims: The renal sodium glucose cotransporter (SGLT2) and the water channel aquaporin-2 (AQP2) play a critical role in tubular sodium and water reabsorption and in the regulation of extracellular fluid volume both in physiologic and pathophysiologic conditions. However, there is little information about SGLT2 and AQP2 expression and/or activity in hypertension and there are no reports during hypertension induced by chronic nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition.

Methods: Hypertension was induced in rats by oral administration of N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (20 mg/kg/24 h) for 6 (H6) or 12 (H12) weeks.

Objective: The purpose of this document is to summarize and evaluate the effectiveness of new automated perimetry tests and algorithms in diagnosing glaucoma and detecting disease progression.

Methods: A literature search on automated perimetry retrieved over 300 citations from 1994 to 2001, of which 71 were selected as relevant to this assessment. The quality of the evidence obtained from these studies was assessed by the methodologist.
