Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a frequent complication in intensive care unit (ICU) patients that increases mortality and chronic kidney disease (CKD) development. AKI is associated with elevated plasma fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), which can be modulated by erythropoietin (EPO) and Klotho. We aimed to evaluate whether a combined biomarker that includes these molecules predicted short-/long-term outcomes.

It is accepted that osteoblasts/osteocytes are the major source for circulating fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). However, erythropoietic cells of bone marrow also express FGF23. The modulation of FGF23 expression in bone marrow and potential contribution to circulating FGF23 has not been well studied.

Background: Gestational diabetes is a prevalent disease associated with adverse outcomes of pregnancy. Smoking as been associated with glucose intolerance during pregnancy in some but not all studies. Therefore, we aimed to systematically review all epidemiological evidence to examine the association between cigarette smoking during pregnancy and risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus.

Virology of infantile chronic recurrent parotitis in Santiago de Chile.

Infantile chronic recurrent parotitis (ICRP) has been attributed to multiple causes, including viral infections, and therefore its treatment remains empirical. Our aim was to evaluate the involvement of respiratory and oropharyngeal viruses in acute episodes of ICRP. Seventy children were studied, 50 patients and 20 age-matched controls, in a 2-year follow-up study.
