Objectives: To analyze the relationship between the geohelminth species found in urban, suburban, and rural areas of the Buenos Aires and Misiones provinces of Argentina, and the socioenvironmental conditions that promote infection by these parasites.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that analyzed 700 human fecal samples taken from 319 families residing in an urban population (UP) and two suburban ones (SUP1, SUP2) in the Province of Buenos Aires, and a rural one in Misiones (RP). Thirty-five samples of dog feces and 205 earth samples were taken, plus surveys were performed of the socioenvironmental characteristics of the study areas.

This study describes the in vivo activity of Lactobacillus johnsonii La1 (NCC533) in Giardia intestinalis-infected gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). Daily administration of lactobacilli in the drinking water from 7 days before inoculation with Giardia trophozoites efficiently prevented G. intestinalis strain WB clone C6 from infecting gerbils.

The synthesis in aqueous solution and pH = 1.0 of several novel Cu(II) compounds with allopurinol and hypoxanthine as heterocyclic ligands and X = Cl(-), Br(-), NO(3)(-), SO(4)(2-), and ClO(4)(-) as anions, together with their spectral and magnetic characterization, is reported. The studies of the Cu(II) systems with these heterocycles and Cl(-) or Br(-) support their Cu(II)(L)(2)(X)(2) character and their interactions through halogen atoms as bridging ligands, leading to a very weak antiferromagnetic coupling.
