IL-6 Inhibition as a Therapeutic Target in Aged Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) onset at an advanced age is associated with a higher risk of developing progressive forms and a greater accumulation of disability for which there are currently no effective disease-modifying treatments. Immunosenescence is associated with the production of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), with IL-6 being one of the most prominent cytokines. IL-6 is a determinant for the development of autoimmunity and neuroinflammation and is involved in the pathogenesis of MS.

Immunosenescence in multiple sclerosis: the identification of new therapeutic targets.

The number of elderly multiple sclerosis (MS) patients is growing, mainly due to the increase in the life expectancy of the general population and the availability of effective disease-modifying treatments. However, current treatments reduce the frequency of relapses and slow the progression of the disease, but they cannot stop the disability accumulation associated with disease progression. One possible explanation is the impact of immunosenescence, which is associated with the accumulation of unusual immune cell subsets that are thought to have a role in the development of an early ageing process in autoimmunity.

Post-earthquake Distress and Development of Emotional Expertise in Young Adults.

After a natural disaster like an earthquake about 15% of the population experience a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, even those without a diagnosis of PTSD can suffer from disorders of the affective sphere, including anxiety, depression and alteration of emotion recognition. The objective of this study was to investigate the neuropsychological and emotional profile of students living in the earthquake-affected areas of L'Aquila, Italy.
