is an anaerobic parasitic protozoan and the causative agent of amoebiasis. expresses proteins that are structurally homologous to human proteins and uses them as virulence factors. We have previously shown that binds exogenous interferon gamma (IFN-γ) on its surface, and in this study, we explored whether exogenous IFN-γ could modulate parasite virulence.

The neuroimmunoregulation of inflammation has been well characterized. Entamoeba histolytica provokes an inflammatory response in the host in which macrophages and neutrophils are the first line of defense. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the 220 kDa lectin of Entamoeba histolytica on stimulation of human macrophages and neutrophils, especially the secretion of cytokines and the relation of these to neurotransmitters.

Background/aims: The development of therapeutic strategies for the treatment of cirrhosis has become an important focus for basic and clinical researchers. Adrenergic receptor antagonists have been evaluated as antifibrotic drugs in rodent models of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced cirrhosis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of carvedilol and doxazosin on fibrosis/cirrhosis in a hamster animal model.

Objective: To study the mechanism of the production and regulation of cytokines in parasympathectomized and control hamsters during the development of amoebic liver abscesses (ALA) caused by Entamoeba histolytica.
Although amebic brain abscess is a rare form of invasive amebiasis, when present, it is frequently lethal. This disorder always begins with the infection of the colon by Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites, which then travel to extra-intestinal tissues through the bloodstream. Amebic brain abscesses are produced when trophozoites invade the central nervous system.
