Purpose: To prospectively evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of proton (hydrogen 1 [1H]) magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy for diagnosing malignant enhancing nonmass lesions identified at breast MR imaging, with histologic examination as the reference standard.

Materials And Methods: In this HIPAA-compliant, institutional review board-approved study, in which all participants gave written informed consent, proton (1H) MR spectroscopy of the breast was performed in suspicious or biopsy-proved malignant lesions that were 1 cm or larger at MR imaging. Single-voxel proton (1H) MR spectroscopic data were collected.

Age-related changes of NADPH-diaphorase-positive neurons in the rat inferior colliculus and auditory cortex.

Nitric oxide (NO) has been implied in age-related changes of the central nervous system (CNS) and the central auditory pathway. The present study was conducted to investigate whether the number of NO-producing cells and their morphometric characteristics in the inferior colliculus (IC) and the auditory cortex (AC) are changed with the increasing age of the subjects. IC and AC sections of adult and senile Wistar rats were studied using the histochemical detection of NADPH-diaphorase activity (NADPH-d), a marker for neurons containing nitric oxide synthase (NOS).

We conducted a randomized open trial to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerance of parenteral aminosidine sulphate (AS) 14 mg/kg/d for 21 days compared with intravenous meglumine antimonate (MA) 20 mg/kg/d for 28 days in patients with moderate MCL in Cuzco, Peru. Objectives: Vocal cord dysfunction is a poorly understood entity that is often misdiagnosed as asthma. Both irritant and non-irritant vocal cord dysfunction have been described. This report presents two cases of irritant vocal cord dysfunction secondary to specific environmental exposure, the first to iroko and western red cedar wood (a carpenter) and the second to xerographic printing toner (a secretary).

The relationship between fatigue and quality of life in children with chronic health problems: a systematic review.

Purpose: This systematic review synthesized the literature regarding fatigue in children with chronic health problems and examined the relationship to quality of life.

Conclusions: Most studies that have examined fatigue and its relationship to quality of life in children with chronic health problems have focused on children with cancer. Studies found that children often reported fatigue and that it decreased quality of life.

Acute dilatation to phytoestrogens and estrogen receptor subtypes expression in small arteries from women with coronary heart disease.

We tested if endothelial function and estrogen receptor (ER) expression differs between resistance arteries in subcutaneous circulation from postmenopausal women with coronary heart disease (CHD, congruent with 1 year after myocardial infarction, n=12) and aged matched controls (n=14); and if acute effects of phytoestrogens (genistein, resveratrol) could be of relevance for vascular protection. Infectious disease morbidity among young HIV-1-exposed but uninfected infants in Latin American and Caribbean countries: the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development International Site Development Initiative Perinatal Study.

Objective: The goal was to describe the frequency, characteristics, and correlates of infectious disease morbidity during the first 6 months of life among HIV-1-exposed but uninfected infants.

Methods: The study population consisted of infants enrolled in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development International Site Development Initiative Perinatal Study who were HIV-1 uninfected and had follow-up data through the 6-month study visit. Definitive and presumed infections were recorded at study visits (birth, 6-12 weeks, and 6 months).

Oral rehydration solution to prevent nephrotoxicity of amphotericin B.

Treatment with amphotericin B deoxycholate (AB) is associated with dose-related nephrotoxicity. We conducted an open and randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of an oral rehydration solution (ORS) to prevent nephrotoxicity of AB, compared with an intravenous saline solution (SS). Adult patients with mucosal leishmaniasis in whom AB was indicated received either three liters or ORS or one liter of SS.

Enzymosomes with surface-exposed superoxide dismutase: in vivo behaviour and therapeutic activity in a model of adjuvant arthritis.

Acylated Superoxide Dismutase (Ac-SOD) enzymosomes, liposomal enzymatic systems expressing catalytic activity in the intact form, were previously characterized. The main scope of the present work was to investigate the biological behaviour of Ac-SOD inserted in the lipid bilayer of liposomes, in comparison with SOD located in the aqueous compartment of liposomes. Two types of liposomes were used: conventional liposomes presenting an unmodified external surface and long circulating liposomes coated with poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG).

There is evidence that one gonad has functional predominance. The present study analyzed the acute effects of unilateral ovariectomy (ULO) and blocking the cholinergic system, by injecting atropine sulfate (ATR), on estradiol (E2) serum concentrations during the estrous cycle. The results indicate that ULO effects on E2 concentrations are asymmetric, vary during the estrous cycle, and partially depend on the cholinergic innervation.

Antibodies against Lutzomyia longipalpis saliva in the fox Cerdocyon thous and the sylvatic cycle of Leishmania chagasi.

Sera of 11 wild Cerdocyon thous foxes from an endemic area for American visceral leishmaniasis were tested for the presence of antibodies against salivary gland homogenates (SGH) of Lutzomyia longipalpis. All foxes had higher levels of anti-Lu. longipalpis SGH antibodies than foxes from non-endemic areas, suggesting contact between foxes and the vector of visceral leishmaniasis.

Controlling self-assembled perovskite-spinel nanostructures.

We report a discovery that self-assembled perovskite-spinel nanostructures can be controlled simply by selecting single-crystal substrates with different orientations. In a model BiFeO(3)-CoFe(2)O(4) system, a (001) substrate results in rectangular-shaped CoFe(2)O(4) nanopillars in a BiFeO(3) matrix; in contrast, a (111) substrate leads to triangular-shaped BiFeO(3) nanopillars in a CoFe(2)O(4) matrix, irrespective of the volume fraction of the two phases. This dramatic reversal is attributed to the surface energy anisotropy as an intrinsic property of a crystal.

[Occupational asthma caused by chromium and nickel].

We report the case of a 40-year-old woman who developed occupational asthma following exposure to chromium and nickel in the nickel-plating section of a metalworks company. Skin prick tests for specific antibodies proved positive for nickel chloride at a concentration of 1 mg/mL and negative for potassium dichromate. The specific bronchial provocation test confirmed the diagnosis of occupational asthma due to exposure to chromium and nickel.

Serological response to pneumococcal vaccination in HAART-treated HIV-infected patients: one year follow-up study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate specific IgG responses against pneumococcal serotypes 1, 6B, 14, 19F, 23F at baseline, 1 and 12 months after vaccination with the 23-valent polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine in 89 HAART-treated HIV-infected patients, 24 antiretroviral "naïve" HIV-infected and 30 non-HIV-infected healthy subjects. Levels of specific antipneumococcal IgG and the mean fold increase in IgG levels at 1 month as well as the kinetics of antibodies along the 12 months in all groups of HIV-infected patients and healthy subjects were similar. Neither CD4 cell count at baseline nor "nadir" CD4 cells correlated with the response to the vaccine.

Nevirapine toxicity in a cohort of HIV-1-infected pregnant women.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to complete an evaluation of nevirapine (NVP) toxicity in a cohort of HIV+ pregnant women.

Study Design: This was a retrospective study of 611 women followed from January 1996 to December 2003. All women who used NVP for > 7 days were included.

Acute responses to phytoestrogens in small arteries from men with coronary heart disease.

The aim of this study was to investigate acute vasodilator responses to phytoestrogens and selective estrogen receptor-alpha (ERalpha) agonist in isolated small arteries from men with established coronary heart disease (CHD) and with a history of myocardial infarction versus healthy male control subjects. As to methodology, small arteries obtained from subcutaneous fat biopsies and mounted on a wire myograph were preconstricted with norepinephrine, and dilator responses to increasing nanomolar-micromolar concentrations of the phytoestrogens resveratrol and genistein (predominantly ERbeta agonists) and to propyl-[1H]-pyrazole-1,3,5-triyl-trisplenol (PPT, a selective ERalpha agonist) were determined. In the present study, we used sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to compare polypeptides of trypanosomes isolated by hemoculture of squirrel monkeys displaying Trypanosoma saimirii blood trypomastigotes, with other trypanosomes that infect primates to evaluate the validity of T. saimirii. The pathobiology of moderate diffuse traumatic brain injury as identified using a new experimental model of injury in rats.

Experimental models of traumatic brain injury have been developed to replicate selected aspects of human head injury, such as contusion, concussion, and/or diffuse axonal injury. Although diffuse axonal injury is a major feature of clinical head injury, relatively few experimental models of diffuse traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been developed, particularly in smaller animals such as rodents.
