Equine asthma (EA) is a respiratory syndrome associated with the increase of different leukocyte populations in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Its pathogenetic mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between the mRNA expression of different cytokines in the BALF, different EA subtypes and lung function.

The Lusitano Horse (LH) originates from Portugal, but is reared worldwide. Since 1994, the University of Milan has routinely tested the LHs bred in Italy for parentage control. This study aims to assess the genetic variability of the LH reared in Italy using 16 microsatellites markers.

Article Synopsis
  • Blood samples from 260 cattle were analyzed to study the association between specific genetic markers and the risk of bladder tumors caused by papillomavirus infections.
  • The DRB322 allele was found in healthy cattle, indicating it may provide protection against urinary bladder virus infections, which are linked to tumor development.
  • Two variants of another allele, DRB3011, were identified; the DRB3011:01 allele showed protective amino acids that may lower infection risk, while the DRB3011:02v allele featured susceptibility amino acids associated with a higher risk of tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • Copy number variants (CNVs) are key genomic variations that can affect traits in various species, but previous studies on cattle have not extensively analyzed CNV patterns using high-density SNP arrays.* ! -
  • In this study, researchers conducted a high-resolution CNV scan on the Valdostana Red Pied (VRP) cattle population using a powerful Beadchip and identified 6,784 CNVs across 108 bulls, revealing distinct losses and gains in genetic information.* ! -
  • Comparisons revealed that the CNVs in VRP were more similar to those in the Italian Brown Swiss breed than to the Mexican Holstein, and analyses showed three separate clusters for the breeds, highlighting genetic differentiation potentially influenced by selective breeding

Donkeys have played an important role in agricultural land practices and in human historical periods of recent past and, still today, are used as a working power in several world areas. The objective of this study was to identify genetic variability in six Italian donkey breeds using mtDNA D-loop. Fifteen haplotypes, grouped in three haplogroups, were identified.

High temperature is one of the prominent environmental factors causing economic losses to the poultry industry as it negatively affects growth and production performance in broiler chickens. We used One Step TaqMan real time RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) technology to study the effects of chronic heat stress on the expression of genes codifying for the antioxidative enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT), as well as for heat shock protein (HSP) 70, HSP90, glucocorticoid receptor (NR3C1), and caspase 6 (CASP6) in the liver of two different broiler genetic strains: Red JA Cou Nu Hubbard (CN) and Ross 508 Aviagen (RO). CN is a naked neck slow growing broiler intended for the free range and/or organic markets, whereas RO is selected for fast growing.

The genetic variability of the mitochondrial D-loop DNA sequence in seven horse breeds bred in Italy (Giara, Haflinger, Italian trotter, Lipizzan, Maremmano, Thoroughbred and Sarcidano) was analysed. Five unrelated horses were chosen in each breed and twenty-two haplotypes were identified. The sequences obtained were aligned and compared with a reference sequence and with 27 mtDNA D-loop sequences selected in the GenBank database, representing Spanish, Portuguese, North African, wild horses and an Equus asinus sequence as the outgroup.
