Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is a diffuse interstitial lung disease (ILD) caused by the inhalation of a variety of antigens in susceptible individuals. Patients with fibrotic HP (fHP) may show histopathological and radiological manifestations similar to patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (usual interstitial pneumonia-like pattern of fibrosis) that are associated with a worse prognosis. We describe here the establishment and characterization of a fibroblastic cell line derived from the broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) of a patient with fHP, a 53 year old man who presented at our Pneumology Unit with cough and dyspnea.

Bone skeletal alterations are no longer considered a rare event in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), especially at more advanced stages of the disease. This study is aimed at elucidating the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. Bone marrow stromal cells, induced to differentiate toward osteoblasts in osteogenic medium, appeared unable to complete their maturation upon co-culture with CLL cells, CLL-cell-derived conditioned media (CLL-cm) or CLL-sera (CLL-sr).

Because a subpopulation of cancer stem cells (tumor-initiating cells, TICs) is believed to be responsible for the development, progression, and recurrence of many tumors, we evaluated the in vitro sensitivity of human glioma TICs to epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) kinase inhibitors (erlotinib and gefitinib) and possible molecular determinants for their effects. Cells isolated from seven glioblastomas (GBM 1-7) and grown using neural stem cell permissive conditions were characterized for in vivo tumorigenicity, expression of tumor stem cell markers (CD133, nestin), and multilineage differentiation properties, confirming that these cultures are enriched in TICs. TIC cultures were challenged with increasing concentrations of erlotinib and gefitinib, and their survival was evaluated after 1-4 days.

Glioblastoma, the most aggressive cerebral tumor, is invariably lethal. Glioblastoma cells express several genes typical of normal neural stem cells. One of them, SOX2, is a master gene involved in sustaining self-renewal of several stem cells, in particular neural stem cells.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Maria Cristina Capra"

  • - Maria Cristina Capra's recent research focuses on the characterization of cell lines and the effects of various cytokines on disease progression, particularly in lung diseases and hematological malignancies, providing insights into the underlying cellular mechanisms.
  • - In her study on fibroblastic cell lines derived from patients with fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis, she identifies key characteristics and potential prognostic factors associated with this interstitial lung disease.
  • - Capra's work on chronic lymphocytic leukemia reveals how CLL cells impair osteoblastogenesis and promote osteoclastogenesis through the action of cytokines like TNFα, IL-6, and IL-11, highlighting the bone complications associated with the disease.
