In this work, the evolution of virgin olive oil from 4 olive varieties when stored at 5°C, 10°C and 20°C for a period of up to 3 years was studied. Free acidity increased progressively for the 4 varieties, staying below the limit for extra virgin olive oil, even at the highest temperature. The peroxide value also increased, reaching its maximum after about 28 months of storage, when some samples stored at 20°C exceeded the limit for extra virgin olive oil.

Objectives: Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) is caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and is often associated with HIV and other immunosuppressive conditions. It is rare in HIV-negative patients, but has been reported in patients who use immune-modulating medications (e.g.

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to determine the previously unreported prevalence of antral pseudocysts in an exclusively pediatric dental population, characterize their presentation, and investigate potential correlates to the presence of these lesions.

Methods: A tripartite chart review was conducted of 2,000 five- to 21-year-old pediatric dental patients at Yale-New Haven Hospital for the presence of antral pseudocysts identifiable on panoramic radiographs. Demographic, medical, and dental variables potentially influencing their pathogenesis were analyzed via descriptive statistics, odds ratios, and Fisher's exact test.

Objective: Systemic sclerosis (SSc; scleroderma) is associated with a wide periodontal ligament (PDL) and mandibular erosions. We investigated the clinical correlates of SSc with these radiologic abnormalities.

Methods: Subjects from the Canadian Scleroderma Research Group cohort underwent detailed radiologic examinations.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare oral radiologic abnormalities associated with systemic sclerosis (SSc) against abnormalities in the general population.

Study Design: Patients with SSc and healthy controls were enrolled in a multi-site cross-sectional study. Included in the radiology examination were a panoramic radiograph, four bitewings, and an anterior mandibular periapical radiograph.

Objective: Systemic sclerosis (SSc; scleroderma) is associated with decreased saliva production and interincisal distance, more missing teeth, and periodontal disease. We undertook this study to determine the clinical correlates of SSc with these oral abnormalities.

Methods: Subjects were recruited from the Canadian Scleroderma Research Group cohort.

Objective: Both oral and global health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are markedly impaired in SSc. In this study we aimed to determine the degree of association between oral HRQoL and global HRQoL in SSc.

Methods: Subjects were recruited from the Canadian Scleroderma Research Group registry.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare oral abnormalities and oral health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with SSc with the general population.

Methods: SSc patients and healthy controls were enrolled in a multisite cross-sectional study. A standardized oral examination was performed.

Objectives: To test whether academic centers (ACs) are more successful than nonacademic centers (NACs) in immunohistochemistry (IHC) external quality assessment challenges in the Canadian Immunohistochemistry Quality Control (CIQC) program.

Methods: Results of 9 CIQC challenges for breast cancer marker (BM) and various non-breast cancer marker (NBM) tests were examined. Success rates were compared between AC/NAC laboratories and those located in small or large cities.

Aim: To examine the presence of markers associated with malignancy, including p53, p21 cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1A, murine double minutes-2, and others, in chronic hyperplastic candidiasis.

Methods: Immunohistochemical methods were used to examine the expression of p53, murine double minutes-2, p21 cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1A, metallothionein, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen in 42 chronic hyperplastic candidiasis lesions and 11 non-infected control tissues. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated digoxigenin-dUTP nick-end labeling was used to examine apoptosis, which was correlated with p53 expression.

Canadian Immunohistochemistry Quality Control (CIQC) operates an academic proficiency testing (PT) program using a traditional expert panel-based qualitative assessment system. The image analysis approach is increasingly considered for use in PT to follow demand for precision in immunohistochemical test calibration. CIQC introduces and explores the usefulness of a novel image analysis-based tool, the laboratory score/reference method score ratio (LSRSR) for PT.

Aims: Pan-cytokeratin (pan-CK) and low molecular weight cytokeratin (LMWCK) tests are the most common immunohistochemistry (IHC) tests used to support evidence of epithelial differentiation. Canadian Immunohistochemistry Quality Control (CIQC), a new provider of proficiency testing for Canadian clinical IHC laboratories, has evaluated the performance of Canadian IHC laboratories in two proficiency testing challenges for both pan-CK and LMWCK.

Methods: CIQC has designed a 70-sample tissue microarray (TMA) for challenge 1 and a 30-sample TMA for challenge 2.

N-myristoyltransferase (NMT) catalyzes the myristoylation of proteins involved in signal transduction, cellular transformation, differentiation, proliferation and oncogenesis. In this study, we report for the first time on the elevated NMT activity in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Increased activity is marked with increased staining for NMT in the OSCC samples compared to the normal adjacent tissues.
